Oscar Night The New York Times
Allen, who was involved in four awards as writer, actor and director, played his regular Monday night stint at clarinet in a Dixieland jazz band at Michael's Pub at 211 East 55th Street.
The awards show itself was a return to the opulence and glamour of years past after the deliberately austere show produced last year by William Friedkin, director of "The Exorcist." It opened with a lavish production number starring Debbie Reynolds and 30 dancers.
Allen left the establishment at 12:15 A.M., before the awards he was up for were announced, making his way with some embarrassment through a crowd of photographers and running through a next-door lobby to a waiting car dressed in a combat jacket and plaid shirt.
