 42 Bde History
The 42nd (East Lancashire) Division fought in Egypt, the Dardanelles, France and Belgium, while the 55th (West Lancashire) Division operated exclusively in France and Belgium, where it established a reputation of being one of the elite divisions.
In 1947, the 42nd and 55th Divisions were amalgamated to form the 42nd (Lancashire) Division composed of the 125th, 126th and 127th Infantry Brigades.
In 1967, Territorial Divisions and their Commands were abolished and replaced by Territorial Army and Volunteer Reserve units commanded by a District Headquarters.

 The 55th (West Lancashire) Division, 1914-1918
The complete Division was reformed in France between 3 and 27 January 1916, and served with distinction on the Western Front throughout the war.
Relieved by 41st Division on 28 September, the Division withdrew to the area of Buire and Ribemont.
The Division faced the enemy counter attack on 30 November 1917; its effect was later examined by a Court of Enquiry, the front line defence apparently crumbling and allowing the enemy to have a "rapid and almost bewildering" advance.

 55th Armored Infantry Battalion (AIB)
On September 28th the division sailed for England with 5000 aboard the U.S.S. “Hermitage” and 4800 aboard the HMS “Samaria”  The troopships docked at Southampton and Liverpool.
In recognition of its "Baptism of Fire" at Acul and Tillet, on December 31st, the 55th was awarded the Combat Infantry Streamer.
The 55th accomplished this mission by 1000 on February 22 with a minimum of casualties allowing the 63rd AIB to proceed with their objective of securing Reiff.

Jeudwine, whose military career had brought him success in defeating the Boers during the South African War of 1899-1902 and whose background was in artillery, was initially Sir Edmund Allenby's Chief of Staff in 1915 at V Corps.
Given command of the Territorial 55th Division from January 1916 until the end of the war, Jeudwine led them into action at Third Ypres in 1917 and at Cambrai later that year in November (where the division was criticised by some for weakness).
Nevertheless 55th Division held the ragged line in the face of fierce German attacks, an action which helped preserve the Channel ports and earned the division subsequent high praise from Haig.

Since most of these Soldiers have had no formal postal training — usually a five-week course is required to become a postal clerk — they went through an intensive training period to get them ready for their new mission.
Wilmore added that incoming mail to the division’s Soldiers never stopped and their mailing addresses have remained the same.
