What projector resolution is best for you?
So a 576p projector needs to take that 480 lines of information and redistribute it over 576 lines, a process which is called scaling.
That is because the HD signal, which is either 1920x1080 or 1280x720, is being compressed into an array of 1024x576 rather than the lower resolution 854x480 array.
So on a 576p projector everything must be scaled in a manner that represents an unattractive compromise for both standard definition and high definition sources.

Nov 17 2003, 06:37 PM 576p is Channel 7's version of HD (albeit officially HD according to the Aussie Standard).
For upconverted HD broadcasts, whether you use 576p or 1080i is probably a personal preference because the picture is similar.
The 1080 pSf material is converted to 576p for HD transmission with a high quality converter which retains the progressive nature of the source material without the artifacting and resolution loss you'd see with de-interlacing conventional 576i50 source material.

I think I recall somone saying that Channel 7 broadcasts in 576p, which if im not mistaken has no resolution change from SD (576i?) just goes to progressive and in PAL land that doesnt make a difference like it does in NTSC land due to some interlace issues not being there with PAL.
If you select 1080i for the DVI connection, the tuner will upconvert 576i to 1080i, and pass 1080i as is. 576p will be first converted to 576i then upconverted to 1080i.
576p will be upconverted to 720p, 1080i will be deinterlaced and down converted to 720p.

Powerstrip and 576p timings - DTV Forum Australia
Basically I would like to hear from anyone who is running Powerstrip software who would be willing to post their Timings and Resolution settings for us to use.
I am still unable to get the TV to recognise a signal as being 576p, which I find quite frustrating, it basically takes everything as 1080i.
Personally I would have really like to get the 576p timings to work because 1024x576 struck me as a really nice pc friendly resolution that wouldn't require much in the way of video scaling.

By tapping Square repeatedly, users are able to cycle through the various output resolutions, which include 480i, 480p, 576p, 720p, and 1080i.
Notably, it cannot accept a 576p signal, which had a rather sizable impact upon the utility of the HDTV Player software, as we're soon to discuss.
Potential purchasers of the Xploder HDTV Player software should make sure that their HDTVs support 576p input before making the purchase, and we cannot vouch for whether or not this is indeed a practical solution.

I can get 720x576 and 640x480 to work on the nvidia card using the progressive signal, which produce a bit softer pictures and does not flicker, but they are of course not widescreen resolutions so the desktop just appears as a box in the middle of the screen with fl edges on each side.

ZDNet Philips DVP5960/37 Review & Comparison
As with all HDMI decks, it has the ability to upconvert DVDs: in this case to 576p, 720p, or 1080i resolution.
One constant to note throughout the tests is that the 576p mode always looked significantly worse than any other resolution and had an unwatchable amount of judder on the TVs we tested.
This was evident in actual movies we watched as well as in test patterns, and we suggest using 1080i, 720p, or 480p instead.

In the natural scheme of things, you might think that 720p would be better than 576p which, in turn, would be better than 576i.
After all, at least notionally, 576p has twice as much information as 576i, and 720p has more than twice as much information (2.22 repeated to be precise) as 576p.
