Upon organization, the squadron absorbed the personnel and resources of the 7th Air Transport Squadron and began performing airlift of passengers and cargo for the increasing mobilization of troops in Southeast Asia.
Redesignated the 58th Military Airlift Squadron on January 8, 1967, it reported to the 436th MAW and began flying the Lockheed C-141 Starlifter.
It was subsequently redesignated the 58th Airlift Squadron on June 1, 1992, and inactivated on October 1, 1993.

Initial operational capability was achieved on January 17, 1995 by the 17th Airlift Squadron at Charleston AFB in North Carolina.
C-17A is intended for strategic airlift and delivery of cargoes by landing on unimproved runways close to the battlefield, but can be employed for LAPES (low-altitude parachute extraction system) delivery of cargo.

In early December, 1961, the Pope wing was alerted to dispatch a squadron to Clark Field, Philippines for a TDY of 120 days.
In late 1963 the TAC rotational squadrons were gradually replaced by permanently assigned C-123 crews who had been drawn from the Air Force at large and put through a training course at Pope.
The PCS'd C-123s were assigned to the 315th Troop Carrier Group but the squadrons bore the designation of the Air Commandos, a new USAF special air warfare organization that was under development at Hurlburt Field, Florida.

7/11/2005 - ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. (AFPN) -- An aircrew from the 58th Airlift Squadron here has made the first dual-row airdrop from a C-17 Globemaster III July 5.
"The importance behind having dual row airdrop capabilities is it will help support the Army's need to perform strategic brigade airdrops, where an entire brigade is dropped onto a drop zone in a certain amount of time," said Maj. John Tringali, an instructor pilot with the 58th AS and the mission commander for the airdrop.
The difference between a dual-row and a conventional airdrop is more than just how much is being dropped; it requires an aircrew to use different procedures when performing the drop.
