Topic: 59th Street Columbus Circle New York Subway

Columbus Circle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The traffic circle was designed by William P. Eno, a businessman who pioneered many early innovations in road safety and traffic control, as part of Frederick Law Olmsted's vision for the park, which included a circle at its Eighth Avenue entrance.
Named for Christopher Columbus, the monument was erected as part of New York's 1892 commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' first voyage to the Americas.
The inner circle measures approximately 36,000 square feet, and the outer circle is approximately 148,000 square feet.

 New York - michaelminn.com
The grandest entrance to the park is the Merchant's Gate on Columbus Circle, erected in 1913 as a memorial to those killed in the explosion of the Maine.
Columbus Circle was so named after a group of Italians donated the marble memorial to Columbus to the city in 1892.
With the completion of the new headquarters for TimeWarner on the west side of Columbus Circle in the Spring of 2004, the circle was again rebuilt, providing a once-in-a-generation opportunity to see the foundation for the monument, resting over the IRT subway line.

The Metropolis Observed: Rediscovering Columbus Circle
In the summer of 1892, at the intersection of Broadway, Eighth Avenue, and 59th Street in New York, ground was broken for a monument commemorating the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's voyage to the New World.
New York architect Rafael Viñoly's proposal was perhaps the most spectacular: a huge, semispherical trellis of walkways and pedestrian overpasses.
This land bridge to Columbus may be the one way to turn this neglected crossroads into a vibrant, viable public space--certainly more than the rhetorical flourish of laying infrastructure bare.
