Subway stations are generally identified at street level by illuminated globes: green for entrances that are open 24 hours a day, red for restricted entry.
Most New Yorkers also turn a deaf ear and blind eye to the beggars on the streets and the subways who sometimes badger those who seem to have interest in their plight.
Free subway maps are available at various hotels or at one of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) information sites located at Grand Central Terminal, Times Square, Port Authority Bus Terminal, the World Trade Center (Building 2, mezzanine), or in Brooklyn at 370 Jay Street.

 IND Station Tile Colors
Since the 'G' line skirts Manhattan, and could thus be said to point away from Manhattan in both directions, all stations from Court Square to Fulton Street have tiles with the same color group, namely green.
Thereafter, all the local stations have the same color (or color group) tiles as the preceding express station.
Original tiles were the same as those at Carroll Street, but 3 tiles high.

 SUBWAY LINE NAMES
The Cortlandt St Station of the 1 and 9 was crushed by the impact of the collapse of the towers.
In 1954, the IND line that terminated at Church Ave was connected to the Culver line and the F trains that terminated there were swapped with the D trains from the Bronx and through-routed to Stillwell.
Thus the north terminal of the M line is in Manhattan even though it is south of the Metropolitan Ave end of the line.

Lafayette Street merges into Centre Street; at the south end of Centre Street is the abandoned City Hall station, on the loop that the 6 service turns around at.
The IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line also switched from shuttle operation at that time, and the 42nd Street Shuttle was formed along the old connection between the sides.
The part of the line from City Hall to 42nd Street was part of the original IRT line, opened on October 27, 1904.

Articles - IND Eighth Avenue Line
At this point, local tracks of both lines interconnect south of the station in another elaborate flying junction which allows local trains of either line to continue south on either the Eighth Avenue Line to Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn or on the Sixth Avenue Line to the Lower East Side and Brooklyn.
The line then continues south under Sixth Avenue (which was built as part of the subway project) and Church Street.
The Eighth Avenue Line, and the remainder of the IND system were built by the City of New York partly to provide modern rapid transit facilities and partly to compete with the private companies, the BMT and IRT.
