  Relational Model: Advanced Normalization
Many practitioners argue that placing entities in 3NF is generally sufficient because it is rare that entities that are in 3NF are not also in 4NF and 5NF.
They further argue that the benefits gained from transforming entities into 4NF and 5NF are so slight that it is not worth the effort.
Adding an instance to an table that is not in 5NF creates spurious results when the tables are decomposed and then rejoined.

In such cases it may be possible to decompose the relation in three or more relations using the 5NF.
The aim of fifth normal form is to have relations that cannot be decomposed further.
A relation in 5NF cannot be constructed from several smaller relations.

Fourth Normal Form (or 4NF) requires that there no non-trivial multi-valued dependencies of attribute sets on something else than a superset of a candidate key.
Fifth Normal Form (or 5NF or PJ/NF) requires that there are no non-trivial join dependencies that do not follow from the key constraints.
Domain-Key Normal Form (or DK/NF) requires that all constraints follow from the domain and the key constraints.

Beside this value, number representing the maximal capacitor working voltage is mandatory, and sometimes tolerance, temperature coefficient and some other values are printed too.
If, for example, capacitor mark in the scheme reads 5nF/40V, it means that capacitor with 5nF capacity value is used and that its maximal working voltage is 40v.
Any other 5nF capacitor with higher maximal working voltage can be used instead, but they are as a rule larger and more expensive.

The root concept behind 4NF, 5NF, and PJNF is that the tables not in these normal forms can be derived from simpler, more fundamental relationships.
[Simsion] Further, 5NF does not differ from 4NF unless there are other rules (symmetric constraints) that dictate correct data population [Kent].
Lastly, 5NF differs from 4NF in that the fact combinations we are concerned with are no longer independent from each other (due to the semantic constraints) [Kent].

We know that each successive level of normalization is based on the presumption that we have met all of the "lower" normal forms leading up to it.
Depending on the type of relationship and how many instances of each attribute exist, 5NF may save you a significant amount of time and space by not processing as many rows in the database.
I have shown you how to take an unstructured database all of the way from 0NF through 5NF, but the developer is reminded that it is neither necessary nor recommended--nor even possible in all cases--to take your database to 5NF.

Normalization past 3NF does not occur often in normal practice because most tables in 3NF are usually also in 5NF.
* 5NF specifies that every join dependency for the entity must be a consequence of its candidate keys.
Forget about it!  Normalization is for academics and in its strictest form is generally impractical due to its adverse effect on performance in a commercial environment, especially 3NF, 4NF and 5NF.

An informal summary of 5NF is 'if even after 4NF you can still find a lossless way of splitting an all key relation, then you should do it'.
A relation is in 4NF but not 5NF if and only if a specific pattern occurs in the data, and that is that three facts in the data imply a third

A Corrected 5NF Definition for Relational Database Design - Vincent (ResearchIndex)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Abstract: In this paper, the adequacy of fifth normal form (5NF) in relational database design is investigated.
It is shown that 5NF is inadequate because it does not generalise fourth normal form (4NF) and because it is equivalent to the very stringent requirement that every attribute is a key, a requirement that is effectively impossible to satisfy in practical database design.
By restricting the join dependencies (JDs) in the set of constraints to those that do not have superfluous components, the...

Now, it's true that Fagin proves in his paper that if relvar R is in DK/NF, then R is automatically in 5NF (and hence 4NF, BCNF, etc.) as well.  However, it's wrong to think of DK/NF as another step in the progression from 1NF to 2NF to...
to 5NF, because 5NF is always achievable, but DK/NF is not.
The net of all of the above is that DK/NF is (at least at the time of writing) a concept that's of some considerable theoretical interest but not yet of much practical ditto.
