In the 604, IBM had to face for the first time a number of problems whose solutions would be important to the computer industry as a whole: the problems of manufacturing, testing, maintaining, and repairing an electronic machine to be produced by the thousands and installed wherever punched-card machines were used for calculating.
The 604 pluggable unit greatly increased the packing density of electronic equipment; the idea was adopted, with appropriate evolutionary changes, for all subsequent calculators and computers developed by the company.
As the tube was used in the 604, secondary emission from certain of the grids, due apparently to their contamination during manufacture, caused loss of control of the voltage on those grids.

 The IBM 604
The 604 performed addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division hundreds of times faster than any of IBM's earlier electromechanical machines, and was the first IBM product to use modular vacuum-tube based pluggable units, later used in IBM's NORC and 701 computers.
The 604 was programmable via plugboard and could execute a program of up to about 60 steps.
But the 604 ate the problem for breakfast, or so it seemed at the time; cost per hour, if the shop had been run for pay, would have been about the same, and the speed was at least six or seven times the 602A, and nearly ten times our vanishing 601s.

On 604 Liverpool-based synth-pop collective Ladytron may show all the electronic hallmarks of 1980 but they impart far less of the "New Dawn Of Technology" neurosis of their cyberphobic "Futuristic" forebears.
OK, so 604 does contain a few Marxist nursery rhymes (sung by stern Bulgarian female vocalist Mira Aroyo) but it also contains a version of the theme tune to 70s sit-com "Are You Being Served" (sung sweetly by the kittenish "Bond Girl" voice of Helen Marnie).
"604" is all early eighties futurism, deadpan cool and flawless pop sensibility.

You must also consider that while other $1600 loudspeakers may image better or are more smooth in the high end, very few of them can produce any real low frequencies.
This is a trade off we're not normally willing to make, thus we recommend the BandW 604 loudspeaker system.
