The divisions were assigned numbers in April 1915 so that, for example, the 'East Anglian Division' became the 54th Division.
For instance, the second line 'Wessex Division' was originally called the '2nd Wessex Division' (later the 45th Division) and the second line battalion for the 1/5th East Surreys was the 2/5th East Surreys.
The first Territorial division to join the fighting on the Western Front was the 46th Division in March 1915.

The British 47th (1/2nd London) Division was a first-line Territorial Force division.
Originally called the "2nd London Division" it was designated the 47th Division in 1915 and referred to as the "1/2nd London Division" after the raising of the second-line 60th (2/2nd London) Division.
The division was sent to France in March 1915, one of the first Territorial divisions to enter the fighting, and served on the Western Front for the duration of the First World War.

 60th (2/2nd London) Division
The 2/2nd London Division was formed from the Home Service men of the Territorial Force units in the 47th Division, it was formed in Great Britain in January 1915.
The Division was reduced to just one English Battalion per Brigade in May 1918, the shortfall was made up by Indian units.
The Division served in Palestine until the Armistice (31 October 1918).

 The Territorial Force 1914-1918
Soon, entire TF Divisions proceeded overseas, either to the fighting fronts or as replacement garrisons as the regular troops were deployed to action.
On 31 August, authority was given to establish a 2nd-Line Division for each of the 1st-Line where more than 60% of the men had volunteered.
These Divisions were formed from late 1914, although the permissible strength of a 2nd-Line unit was only half of the normal establishment.

 HQ AIF, the Australian Flying Corps, Light Horse
On 20.6.1917 the Leicester Battery was transferred from the division, the remaining batteries being grouped as the XVIII Brigade, RHA(TF).
The XIX Brigade, RHA(TF) was allotted to the Australian Mounted Division and comprised 'A' and 'B' Batteries HAC, and the 1st/1st Nottinghamshire Battery RHA(TF).
Division Standing Orders, 1917, Appendix IV, simply states that "T.M. Batteries wear a light blue grenade in addition [to the respective colour patch].", which may have led to occasional liberal interpretation of the original authority.

6th June 2004 marked the 60th Anniversary of D-Day, the start of the Allied Invasion of Europe that brought an end to the lunacy of World War II and brought the liberation of Europe from fascist dictatorship.
In Ottawa, the Canadian Parliament rose to sing, "God Save the King" and the "Marseillaise." Broadcasting from London, King George told his people, "This time the challenge is not to fight to survive, but to fight to win." Broadcasting from Paris, Nazi authorities told citizens that anyone cooperating with the Allies would be shot.
Of all the heart-rending moments in yesterday's 60th anniversary commemorations of the Normandy landings, the most poignant was the sight of British veterans walking away from an open-air service in Bayeux carrying their flags slung casually over their shoulders with all the weariness of their 80 years and more.

Robert Lee Rutldedge of 7th Armored Division's 48th Armored Infantry Battalion was killed between Asten and Meijel, Holland on October 29, 1944, though at the time he was listed as MIA for several months.
He sailed with the Division on the Queen Mary and saw combat across France and at both Overloon and Meijel in Holland, where he was captured 29 October 1944.
Marden Goodwin was drafted in July 1941 and cadréd from 3rd Armored Division to become one of the original members of the 7th Armored Division 1 March 1942.

I was aboard the Kinzer when she left Norfolk in January, 1945 for the Panama Canal Stayed on her all through the invasion of Okinawa.
During that operation, we did a reconnoiter behind enemy lines, with the USS Lindsey (DM32) She was guarding the Kinzer, when hit by 2 Kamikaze on April 12, 1945.
