The 60th Coast Artillery (AA) (60th CA), during the World War II era, was part of USAFFE's Harbor Defenses of Manila and Subic Bays, under the Philippine Coast Artillery Command.
The 60th CA was equipped with 3-inch guns (an older model with a vertical range of 8,200 m), 37mm guns,.50-caliber machine guns, and 60-inch Sperry searchlights.
One battery, with a platoon of searchlights, was located at Fort Wint, in Subic Bay.

Coast Artillery for manning the 60-inch antiaircraft searchlight; 4 Philippine Scouts from Fort Frank manning the B-2 station for that fort; medical detachment, one officer and one enlisted man; Ordinance personnel were civilian Ordinance machinists, numbering 3 or 4.
The remaining defense was seacoast artillery, and it is a matter of record that almost all of the open seacoast batteries had either been knocked out or rendered ineffective with the outstanding exception of the 14-inch guns on Fort Drum guarding the south channel.

In 1939 G Battery left to serve in 5th Regiment Royal Horse Artillery and DD Battery was formed to replace it as part of the re-organisation of the Royal Artillery after Dunkirk, in October 1941.

With three airfields in their hands and no signs of a counterattack, the Japanese commanders decided to move the entire regiment down the west coast and join up with the main forces of the XIV Army that were to land on the beaches of Lingayen Gulf.
The XLVIII Division, the IX Infantry Regiment, four artillery regiments with 75-mm, 105-mm, 150-mm guns and 150-mm howitzers, two tank regiments with 80/100 tanks, and a large number of service and special troops were put ashore on the north coast of Lingayen Gulf.
The 60th was credited with shooting down at least 25 aircraft during this six-day period but the record does not tell the complete story.

After the Coast and Field Artilleries were separated, the Artillery School was reorganized under the name of The Coast Artillery School as directed by General Orders No. 178, War Department, 28 August 1907 (Figure 5).

Chief of Coast Artillery Major General Joseph A. Green had recommended reassigning elements of the Harbor Defenses to anti-aircraft duty, but this proposal was rejected.
The War Department had been intending to send three additional AA regiments and two brigade headquarters, however this was not accomplished before the Japanese invasion in December of 1941.

About five hundred men of the 200th Coast Artillery (AA) from Clark Field were dispatched to Manila during the day, supplied with equipment from the Philippine Ordnance Depot, and organized into a provisional antiaircraft regiment, later designated the 515th.
The B-17s at Clark refueled and took off immediately after their arrival, remaining in the air until dark to avoid being caught on the ground as had the others the day before.

Many of the remaining bomb and artillery shell craters are 40 to 50 feet across and 15 to 25 feet deep.

There was no plan to concentrate on the west coast and no schedule for the movement of men and supplies to the Philippines.
When stopped, they always had the same story to tell-how they were subjected to heavy mortar and artillery fire, bombed and strafed by enemy planes, threatened by hostile tanks usually headed straight for them, deserted by their officers, and left all alone to meet the oncoming Japanese.

Al McGrew explains: "The 60th Coast Artillery consisted of anti-aircraft batteries, searchlight batteries and Headquarters batteries.
It had six AA gun batteries, B, C, D, F, G, and H. Four 50 cal. machine batteries, I, K, L and M. and two searchlight batteries, A and E. Each battery had about 100 to 120 men.
Since AA guns shoot up, the walls of sandbags were 7 or 8 feet high.

Private First Class Skabicki was serving in the Philippine Islands at the outbreak of the war, with Headquarters Company of the 60th Coast Artillery Regiment at Fort Mills, on Corregidor.
The AA shells lacked proper fuses, as did many of the 155mm artillery shells.
One of these men was a soldier named Red Wells, private first class, from the 59th coast artillery.

 Robert G. Winston, WWII POW and Corregidor Survivor
The Army first sent him to Angel Island, California, then he was assigned to Battery D, 60th Coast Artillery and deployed to the Philippines (then a territory of the United States).
A young soldier named Bingham, took Winston's place on the AA gun, while he went to operate the height finder.
It is dedicated to First Sergeant Dewey Brady, Battery D, 60th CA (AA), who was killed in action at Ft. Mills, Corregidor, Philippine Islands, on April 24th 1942 by enemy artillery fire from Bataan peninsula.
