		It's different from the three other Mravinsky Leningrad live recordings I've heard, from the 1961 Bergen Festival (Hunt 714), the 1978 Vienna Festival (Melodiya VDC 1008, n.l.a.) and in their own hall in 1983 (Erato 45755).
		Inclusion of Kurt Sanderling's recording of Symphony No. 4, recorded during the same sessions, surely is a plus although one wonders why Mravinsky didn't conduct this as well as the other two.

		(This first was the composer's own recording made for London/Decca in the 1960s.) The other two recordings, a recent one on Erato conducted by Kent Nagano, and a live broadcast from the 1951 world premiere on VAI, present the opera in four acts.
		The principal difference between the two versions comes at the end of the original Act I: Captain Vere addresses his crew and thereby establishes the bond between him and the men under his command.
		The first Billy Budd, Theodore Uppman, is said to have captured these qualities perfectly, and Thomas Hampson also is the cynosure of the Erato recording.

		Admittedly, the sound quality of Erato's recording of Rostropovich performing the Dvorak Cello Concerto and the Tchaikovsky Rocco Variations is still better than Deutsche Grammophon's digital image bit remastered version with Rostropovich accompanied by Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic.
		Certainly for both recordings, Rostropovich gives warm, passionate performances of these works; his interpretations in the Erato recording may sound more vibrant than these on the Deutsche Grammophon CD, but this may have more to do with sound quality than with his splendidly lyrical playing.
		I doubt I have heard a better concerto recording from them; most noteworthy is the lush, warm tone created by the strings, sounding almost as warm as any I have heard from the Vienna Philharmonic's string sections.
