An Assyrian general in the region unsuccessfully revolted; Ashur-etil-ilani's brother Sinsharishkun then seized Babylon and proclaimed himself king of that city, but in 626 BC a rebellion in Babylon (probably incited by the future Babylonian king Nabopolassar) forced Sinsharishkun out, and he retreated to Nineveh.
The empire of Assyria was too small for the royal brothers and war broke out between them, which lasted three years until Ashur-etil-ilani was killed in battle near Nippur.
