THE CHURCH OF ST. EUPHEMIA NEAR THE HIPPODROME   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The Saint's name is associated with the Fourth General Council of Chalcedon held in 451, when 630 inspired Fathers of the Church met in the basilica of St. Euphemia to condemn the monophysite heresy of Eutychius.
The iconography of the Saint reproduces the miraculous event and the martyr is known as St. Euphemia of the Canon.
On 8 July 1704, the Patriarch Gabriel III of Chalcedon issued an apodeixis to the Christians of Constantinople enjoining that the feast-day of St. Euphemia be celebrated annually with a procession round her holy relic placed in the middle of the patriarchal church.

After much debate, the Fathers who were the defenders of Orthodoxy, being 630 in number, agreed among themselves and with those who were of contrary mind, to write their respective definitions of faith in separate books, and to ask God to confirm the truth in this matter.
After three days of night-long supplications, they opened the reliquary in the presence of the Emperor, and found the tome of the heretics under the feet of the Martyr, and that of the Orthodox in her right hand.
