  IGN: IGN64's Ultimate 64DD FAQ
The 64DD (64-megabyte Dynamic Drive) is a writable magnetic (not magneto-optical) disk drive that attaches to the bottom of your N64 console and connects via the EXT slot.
Data on 64DD disks is stored on two sides, for a total of 64 megabytes (eight times the size of Mario 64).
The 64DD is a peripheral designed to be used in conjunction with the N64 and will not work by itself.

  64DD
The first is that it will come bundled with a 4 megabyte RAM expansion, which will plug into the jumper-pak on the top of N64 itself, bringing the whole system RAM to a total of 8 megabytes.
The mouse, video-capture casette, and voice-recognition pak will not be bundled with the 64DD, but instead is likely to come bundled with some of the 64DD's launch titles.
An understandable concern about 64DD disks is that, since they are magnetic medium, they will be suspectable to damage/data-loss from magnetic fields and generally less reliable than cartridges.

nintendojo ~ a site to see
The main reason the 64DD will come out in the US lies in two factors — Hiroshi Yamauchi’s desire to be right that you don’t need CD for next generation gaming, and Nintendo’s utmost confidence in their marketing division.
Of course, I have no guarantees that the 64DD will be good enough to pay money for, but the reasons that past peripherals have failed fall into three camps — the launch games didn’t warrant purchase, the marketing was terrible, or the system was on its last legs anyway.
A bundled N64 and 64DD to entice new owners is not out of the question.

While the most popular of uses was the 64DD, other companies found uses for the Extension port, primarily for piracy, though the hardware was originally intended for, and used by some companies, as an inexpensive N64 development device, or even just to quickly develop a product demo.

 IGN: Everything About the 64DD
After all, the 64DD (which actually stands for 64 Dynamic Drive) was going to be the platform of choice for games like Zelda and Earthbound ¿ and it would fix many of the N64's problems third-party publishers and developers were complaining about at the time.
Apart from the large size (the drive alone is 78mm tall, which makes it hard to fit the N64/DD combo into an AV rack), I have no complaints with the design of the unit from a hardware standpoint.
The 64DD does exactly what it was designed to do: enable the creation of original "niche" titles that blur the line between games and creativity tools.

Needless to say, this was a bit strange, but Nintendo has always been somewhat individualistic, and visitors were quite content (some even delighted) to concentrate on the existing titles at the show, of which there were a surprising amount, not to mention quality.
Nintendo also announced the 64DD at the show, which I've covered in previous columns in hardware terms, and it should be available around December 1st.
The 64DD will also boasts multiplayer and spectator modes via the Net, something Sega hasn’t really picked up on successfully yet (Nintendo's earlier experiences with Satellaview for the SNES would seem to indicate they have it in hand).

 Nintendojo: Requiem for a System - 64DDenied
Nintendo of Japan displayed the 64DD along with the N64 at its true unveiling, selling it to the press not as a last-minute add-on for a dying system such as Sega’s 32X, but an accessory planned from the beginning-- something to be used as a supplementary bonus for true gamers.
The 64DD was a disk drive for the N64 which used disks far larger (in terms of storage space) than most cartridges, allowing for immense amounts of data to be recorded on them.
While it was not actually confirmed at the event, Howard Lincoln, Nintendo’s PR wizard at the time, spoke of the decreased costs of cartridges and the growth in their storage capabilities.
