  Motorola 6809
The 6809 was a major advance over both its predecessor, the Motorola 6800 and also over the MOS Technologies 6502.
The 6809 was source compatible[?] with the 6800, even though the 6800 had 78 instructions and the 6809 only had 59.
The optimisation of the 6809 processor meant that, unlike many processors of the day, the instructions were mostly hardwired into the processor, rather than written using microcode.

Motorola 6809 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Among the significant enhancements introduced in the 6809 were the use of two 8-bit accumulators (A and B, which could be combined into a single 16-bit register, D), two 16-bit index registers (X, Y) and two 16-bit stack pointers (U, S).
The 6809 was source-compatible with the 6800, though the 6800 had seventy-eight instructions to the 6809's fifty-nine.
The Hitachi 6309 was an enhanced version of the 6809 with extra registers and additional instructions, including block move, additional multiply instructions and hardware-implemented division.

 OS-9
The first version ("level one") was written in assembly language for the Motorola 6809 processor, and provides a single 64K address space in which all processes ran; a later 6809 version ("level two") takes advantage of memory mapping hardware.
Later, OS-9/6809 was converted to Motorola 68000 assembly language and extended, and a still further extended version was written mostly in C for portability.
OS-9 has had a modular design from the beginning, influenced by the notions of how the designers of the 6809 thought software would be sold in the future as described in a three-part series of articles in Jan-Mar 1979 Byte magazine.

I had taken on some work with a local company who was using the "new" Motorola 6809 processor.
The 6809 was a vastly different architecture, and had many features which were ahead if its time (such as stack relative addressing).
In fact, the 6809 still holds the reputation as one of the most powerful general purpose 8-bit processors ever produced.
