Motorola 68020 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was, however, extremely uncommon to see more than one CPU or FPU in the same system.
Most Unix boxes made with 68020s were simply the '020, an FPU (68881 or 68882) and an MMU (68841 or 68851).
The new addressing modes added another level of indirection to many of the pre-existing modes, and added quite a bit of flexibility to various indexing modes and operations.

The Performance Series II A1230 Turbo+ is faster and more expandable to take the Amiga 1200 to the limit (and in some cases beyond standard A4000-040 performance!).
The first module for this connector is a high-speed DMA SCSI board with the latest in active termination that prevents noise-induced data errors that can cause problems with normal passive termination.
The 68882 is twice as fast as the older, obsolete 68881 chip that is still being used on some competitors products.

I noticed that the 68882 FPU on the IIci MB was the same size as the CC's FPU socket.
The moral of the story is that you should be able to harvest a 68882 FPU from the logic board of a IIcx or IIci for use in other Macs that use a socketed 68882 FPU.
In my case it is a Color Classic, but it should also work for the Sockets in PDS card for IIsi's or LC's.

I also got a 68882 and stuck it in (about 10 minutes work, what with opening the case and all.) Unfortunately I didn't record any benchmarks before installing the coprocessor, though I looked at SysInfo, and the speed comparison tests are _about_ the same before and after the 68882.
Also, the ease of adding the 68882 and changing the RAM was nice.

The Macintosh IIcx is the third new Macintosh announced in the past six months that features full 32-bit 68030 and 68882 microprocessors and Apple's SuperDrive, which allows users to easily access non-Macintosh disks.
A new capability introduced with Macintosh IIcx is auto-restart, which allows the system to restart itself in the event of a power outage.
Technical Specifications The Macintosh IIcx system's 68030 runs at 16MHz, as does its 80-bit 68882 math coprocessor. The 68030 has separate 256-byte caches for data and instructions, plus a built-in Page Memory Management Unit (PMMU) used by advanced multitasking operating systems such as A/UX, Apple's UNIX system.

Where can I get an MMU or FPU for my computer?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
If you have a 68020 and need an MMU, the 68551 MMU is the only choice.
If you have a 68020 or 68030 and need an FPU, there are two choices: the 68881 and 68882; the 68882 has more FPU instructions on-board and is of a newer design, but it will be more expensive.
Most Amiga and Atari mail-order dealers will carry these chips; since these are standard Motorola chips, you don't need to buy them from a dealer for your system (just make sure you get one with the right speed rating).

 Profile: Mac Color Classic
The end of the Classic line in the North American market, the Color Classic shared the motherboard design of the LC II - equally limited in RAM expansion, constricted by a 16-bit data bus, and able to use 16-bit PDS cards designed for the LC.
The only significant difference is the presence of a socket for adding a 68882 math coprocessor.
The Color Classic's claim to fame is a tiny, remarkably crisp 10" (9" viewable) 512 x 384 pixel color monitor - and Apple IIe emulation using a PDS card.
