  6SN7 TUBES IN STOCK
The 6SN7 tube is a medium-mu twin triode in an octal based package, usually glass, although some metal envelope types were made.
I suspect these are cylindrical plates, as most of the European 6SN7 varieties have been this type.
This is the rare early 1940s version of the military 6SN7 that predates the brownbase series, this version just slightly later than the nickel base version.

Numerous other variations on the 6SN7 type have been offered over the years, including 7N7 (Sylvania 1940, loktal-base version), 5692 (RCA 1948, a super-premium version with guaranteed 10,000 hour lifetime), 12SX7 (RCA 1946, intended for use in 26-volt aircraft electronics), 1633 (RCA 1941, also for 26-v radios), 6042 (1951, another 1633 type), and 6180 (1952).
The designer of the famous Williamson amplifier, one of the first true high-fidelity designs, suggested use of the 6SN7 since it was similar to the British triodes that he used in his circuit.

The deHavilland Electric Amplifier Company UltraVerve Line Pre-Amplifier Review By Dick Olsher   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The 6SN7 is driven with kid gloves at about one watt plate dissipation, so expect long tube life.
The UltraVerve's single gain stage lives and dies by the choice of 6SN7, since the pre-amplifier is adept at revealing differences between the good, the bad, and the ugly.
It stands to reason that the circuit's simplicity, tube rectification, and of course, that fabulous 6SN7 big-tone are in great measure responsible for this level of directness and musicality.

The 6SN7 is an octal tube used either in preamps or as a driver in a power amp.
There is a body of opinion that considers the pinnacle of octal-based preamp design to be the MFA Luminescence B1C or Lumi for short.
The 5692 is a militarized version of the 6SN7, originally designed to work with artillery (all the vibration was destroying tubes at a frightening rate).

Stereophile: Cary Audio Design SLP 05 preamplifier
Developed in 1939, the 6SN7 appeared just in time for America's involvement in World War II, and its use in a variety of military settings spurred a remarkable level of demand, the influence of which continues to be felt in the new/old stock (NOS) tube marketplace.
Today, the 6SN7 remains popular among high-end audio engineers, having surpassed the otherwise ubiquitous 12AX7—the miniature dual-triode that RCA developed in 1946, ostensibly as a replacement for the 6SN7—in some parts of our own community, if not the more lucrative industry of musical-instrument amplifiers.
In particular, the single-ended-triode movement embraced the 6SN7 and its variants for use as a small-signal voltage amplifier.

The BV was borne in a creative spark some two years ago as a showcase for the venerable 6SN7 dual triode, an octal with a reputation for being a great driver tube.
The first two criteria are based on the desire to keep things fairly simple and to allow the 6SN7 to dominate the sonic signature of the preamp.
Their voltage drop may need to be tweaked from the value indicated in the schematic to obtain 6.3 VDC.

The input signal from the preamp or line source is direct-coupled to the grid of one section of the 6SN7 input.
The drive signal is amplified through this first section in a class-A grid-driven circuit with the output signal inverted 180' out of phase at the anode, then coupled to one half of the push-pull bank of KT88s.
At the same time, the second half of the dual-triode 6SN7 is cathode-driven in a grounded-grid, noninverting, class-A gain stage coupled to the other half of the push-pull bank of KT88s.

I have looked at a bunch of old schematics, and I have seen the ampeg schematic using the 6sn7 (and a few other schematics), but it seems that this tube was used for phase-inverters or to drive a reverb tank, rather than as a straight ahead gain stage.

Since the 6SN7 (600 mA) draws twice the heater current that a 12SN7 (300 mA) does, the resistor will experience twice the voltage drop with the 6SN7 as the 12SN7.
And when the 6SN7 is used, the resistor will drop 12.6 volts, leaving 6.3 volts for the 6SN7.
As this resistor will dissipate 7.5 watts of heat with the 6SN7 and 3.75 watts with the 12SN7, it should be rated for at least 10 watts and 20 watts much would be safer.

In fact, the use of the 6SN7 was one of the reasons I was originally interested in the Diva preamp.
The KR10 tube used in the preamp has been modified, so that it now has a pin structure that is identical to that of the 6SN7.
This means that KR10 tubes and 6SN7 tubes can be interchanged in the Diva preamp, although we should recognize that they have different operating parameters, and therefore, the preamp can really only be optimized for one tube or the other, unless some type of switch is installed.

 6SN7 Info & Links
It was widely used in the early days of television as the vertical amplifier, and it's use was so common in most TV chassis designs that vintage 6SN7 tubes are still fairly easy to find today.
The demands for these tubes today are primarily in vintage and recent design audio amplifiers and preamplifiers of the high-fidelity type, up to and including the most expensive and esoteric.
It seems there is a 6SN7 tube for every taste and budget, and some of the vintage versions are being hunted to extinction, especially those made for the military.

The 6SN7 came out of a prewar family of medium-mu radio tubes, starting with the single triodes 27, 37, 56, 76, 6P5, 6C5, 6J5, and then, the dual-triode 6SN7, introduced in 1940.
The 6SN7, used in millions of radios and early fl-and-white TV sets, was replaced by the 12AU7 miniature tube in the early Fifties.
In fact, the 6FQ7 miniature was introduced as a direct-replacement for the 6SN7, carrying forward the low-distortion characteristics of the 6SN7, but saw very little use in Fifties hifi equipment as a result of higher cost.

Call me narrow-minded, or just plain ignorant, but there is something about the sound of the 6SN7 tube in a preamp that, to my ears, betters the more commonly used 6922 or 6DJ8.
I've been told that the 6SN7 is easier to work with and get a good sound out of than a 6922, due to that tube's microphonics and other issues, and, well, I believe it.
A good 6SN7, due to its dual triode capability, can handle a stereo signal all on its own, though I have seen several preamps, such as the BC21 in question here, use two (one per channel), and the Wyetech Jade, which uses three.
