 Sixth Regiment U.States Infantry History
By May 1, 1918, the 6th Infantry Regiment and the rest of the 5th Infantry Division had assembled in France after arriving from the ports in the vicinity of Bar-sur-Aube where intensive training was conducted under the supervision of French instructors.
The 6th Infantry Regiment was directed to attack on August 17 with the mission of seizing Frapelle and reducing the salient.
In 1993, the 5th Infantry Division was inactivated, and the 3rd and 4th Battalions were re-flagged under the 2nd Armored Division at Ft. Hood; the 1st Battalion moved from Illesheim to Vilseck, Germany, and came under the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division; and the 6th and 7th Battalions were inactivated.

The 6th Regiment of United States Infantry is credited with being at the battles Ft. George, York, Beaver Dams, Frenchman's Creek, La Colle Mills, and provided the bulk of the Regulars at Plattsburg.

The Regiment, under the command of Colonel Frederick W. Cortenius of Kalamazoo, started from its rendezvous to join the Army of the Potomac, August 30, 1861, with an enrollment of 944 officers and men.
From this point the Regiment, as a whole, or in detachments, made many excursions into the surrounding country up and down the Mississippi River, capturing and destroying public property and Confederate supplies, many of the excursions being of a highly dangerous nature.
From May until July the 6th., it was engaged in the Seige of Port Hudson, where it received special commendation for its gallantry and daring.

An immense throng gathered at the station in Pottsville to utter the "good bye." The enthusiasm, along the whole line of march, was unbounded; farm houses were decorated with flags, and the farmers' wives and daughters waved their hats and kerchiefs, with a zeal worthy of the inspiring cause.
The regiment was stationed at the Baltimore depot, a portion of the command occupying the large tent of the Young Men's Christian association.
The Sixth regiment went into camp near the town of Williamsport, from whence, the enemy's cavalry was visible on the opposite shore.

Following the evacuation of Columbus, Kentucky, the regiment moved to Corinth, Mississippi, via Humboldt and Union City, and was heavily engaged in the Battle of Shiloh on April 6-7.
On October 22, 1863 the regiment went on an expedition to Sweetwater, but returned shortly, and on November 12, 1863 was placed in Major General William H. Walker's Division, along with the rest of Maney's Brigade which now eonsisted of the lst/27th, 4th Confederate, 6th/9th, 41st, 50th Tennessee Regiments, and 24th Battalion of Sharpshooters.
During all this time, the regiment was almost constantly engaged in the campaign from Dalton to Atlanta, Cheatham's Division sharing with Cleburne's the duty of rearguard for the army.

eaving Camp William Penn on October 14th, 1863 the ”6th” joined the army at Fortress Monroe, and was, in the course of its history, attached to the Eighteenth, Tenth and Twenty-fifth Corps.
In its two years of service the regiment had a more active part in a field of operations covering a large portion of two States than any other colored regiment originating in Pennsylvania.

The records of the 6th Florida Infantry Regiment show that Joseph White was absent, sick at home in Jackson County (sic), Florida, during the period of 28 March to 30 April 1862.
The latest date given in his Compiled Confederate Service Record is on a receipt for clothing for the period of 1 April to 30 June 1864, by which it can be taken that he had returned to duty by 30 June 1864.
The 6th Florida Infantry Regiment was a part of Finley's (Florida) Brigade of the Army of Tennessee, served in its campaigns from Kentucky down through Tennessee and Georgia, and finally surrendered in North Carolina.
