 | | On Sunday, at Wivenhoe's VE Commemoration Service at the Congregational Church, Cllr Peter Hill, Town Mayor, and Patrick Baxter, Chairman of the Wivenhoe branch of the Royal British Legion, launched a fund to raise £3,250 to pay for much needed cleaning, and repairs to the base of Wivenhoe's War Memorial in St Mary's churchyard. |
 | | It is believed that Beatrice Varrow, widow of George Ernest Varrow, paid for the Memorial in 1921. |
 | | George Varrow, Sapper 164966, from General Base Depot, Royal Engineers, died in the 6th General Hospital in Rouen, France, on 18th February, 1917, aged 29 years. |
