The battalion's new commander was Lieutenant Colonel Henry A. Mucci.
The battalion was transferred to Finchhaven, New Guinea, where it was reorganised as a Ranger Battalion and redesignated as the 6th Ranger Battalion.
Elements of the battalion were sent to Santiago Island to secure the entrance to the Gulf and prevent the enemy outflanking the landing area.

The Rangers were split into two groups as well: C Company, led by Capt. Prince, would attack the main camp and escort the prisoners out, while thirty members from F Company commanded by Lt. John Murphy would signal the start of the attack by firing into various Japanese positions.
The Rangers at the main gate maneuvered to bring the guard barracks under fire, while the ones at the rear eliminated the enemy near the prisoners' huts and then proceeded with the evacuation.
Rangers carried the prisoners out, and many were so light that some Rangers carried two men on their backs.

Henry A. Mucci (1909—April 20, 1997) was an Army Colonel and Ranger.
Mucci announced that the Battalion was being converted from Field Artillery to Rangers, downsized the battallion from 1,000 men to 500, and held a training camp in New Guinea where he utilized commando type training techniques for over a year.
During the liberation of the Philippines General Walter Kreuger and one of his top men, Horton White, chose Mucci to head the liberation of the Cabuanatuan Prison Camp due to both the difficult and peculiar needs of such a mission.

A Japanese battalion regularly bivouacked about a mile from the camp and a division-sized unit was believed to be around Cabanatuan City, three to four miles from the camp.

In 1998 after several years of researching World War II, our CEO Tim Torey and his wife Lisa, decided that too much attention was being placed on the 2nd Ranger Battalion during the Invasion of France, 6 June, 1944 and that other Ranger units were being forgotten.
In July of 2002, the groups name changed to the "5th Ranger Infantry Battalion Re-enacted" and the organization began to achieve individualized recognition, separate from a parent society.
In August 2004, the 5th had the opportunity to be invited and attended the WWII Ranger Reunion in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
