 BBC - History - Virgil (Publius Vergilius Maro) (70 - 19 BC)
Virgil's most famous eclogue is the fourth, the so-called Messianic Eclogue, which until the 19th century was taken as prophesying the birth of Christ; in reality it probably looked to the expected son of Mark Antony and Octavian's sister, Octavia.
Virgil's next work was the Georgics, published in 29 BC and dedicated to Octavian's friend and agent Maecenas, who after the publication of the Eclogues had become Virgil's patron.
Virgil devotes his four books to, respectively, crops, trees and shrubs, livestock, and bees; but at a deeper level, and most obviously in the final book, the poem is a reflection on man's place in the universe and on the human condition.

Malaspina Great Books - Virgil (or Vergil) (70 BCE)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Publius Vergilius Maro, 15 October 70 - 19 BC, known in English as Virgil or Vergil, Latin poet, is the author of the Eclogues, the Georgics, and the Aeneid, a narrative poem in twelve books that deserves to be called the Roman Empire's national epic.
In 42 BC, after the defeat of Julius Caesar's assassins, Brutus and Cassius, the demobilized soldiers of the victors were settled on expropriated land and Vergil's estate near Mantua was confiscated.
But Octavian, who had defeated Antony at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC and two years later had the title "Augustus" given him by the Roman senate, was already pressing Vergil to write an epic in praise of his regime.

Seventy years of Babylonian rule   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Babylon's rule lasted 70 years, from 609 BC when the last Assyrian king, Ashur-uballit II, was defeated in Harran, until 539 BC when the Medo-Persians conquered Babylon.
In Daniel 9:1-2, the prophet Daniel refers to the 70 years in that "the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years." But he too does not state that the captivity was supposed to last 70 years.
Using the 609 BC date for the demise of the Assyrian Empire and for the rise of the new Babylonian Empire, and using the 539 BC date for the end of the Babylonian Empire, we end up with a 70-year span of Babylonian rule.
