Contrast effects make the two quite the colorful pair, nineteenth-century Admiral Smythe calling them "pale topaz and violet." The primary (70 Oph A) is a class K0 star with a magnitude of 4.22, A temperature of 5290 Kelvin, a luminosity 0.51 that of the Sun, and a radius of 0.85 solar.
The respective parameters for the fainter secondary star (70 Oph B) are magnitude 6.01, 4250 Kelvin, 0.16 solar luminosities, and 0.70 solar radii.
The binary orbit: 70 Ophiuchi B is seen in elliptical orbit about 70 Ophiuchi A (though in reality, each orbits a common center of mass).

70 Ophiuchi is the (eastern) left-most star of a triangle of 4th magnitude stars a few degrees to the east (left) of Beta and Gamma Ophiuchi below Hercules.
70 Ophiuchi is one of the most interesting binaries in the sky for an amateur sized telescope for several reasons: both components are fairly bright, it has a large separation and it appears to move rapidly.
70 Ophiuchi A is a little less than half the luminosity of the Sun and 70 Ophiuchi B is less than 1/10 of the luminosity of the Sun.

Based on new measurements (Dimitri Pourbaix, 2000) found in the new Sixth Catalog of Visual Orbits of Binary Stars, 70 Ophiuchi A and B may be separated on average by a semi-major axis of 23.2 AUs (4.554") in a highly elliptical orbit (e= 0.499) that takes 83.38 years to complete.

Varying from magnitude 6 to 9 at a period of just less than one year (334 days), X Ophiuchi really is a great "beginning" variable star and is ideal for the ETX 60 and 70 with their wide fields of view.
At magnitude 7.0, this is one of the brightest globulars and presents a wider "scattering" of stars.
In the ETX 60 and 70 and all scopes with very low power and wide fields, this provides one of the most striking of all celestial sights, in a very, very rich star field of the fringes of the Milky Way.

The 1991 Southern Hemisphere Complex os Activity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Abstract - Calibration of nearby visual binary stars on the HR diagram is used to determine the helium abundance, age and mixing length parameter for stars other than the Sun.
Complementing these results by those for the Sun and it is shown that in the framework of the mixing length formalism to describe convection, a unique value of the mixing length parameter, equal to the solar one can be used to model these objects.
Except for 85 Pegasi system, which cannot be explained by means of standard stellar evolutionary models, the helium abundance is determined with a precision of 0.02 (abundance in mass) and the age with a precision of 2 Gyr.
