The Academy Awards: Hollywood at its worst
The 71st Academy Awards ceremony Sunday night was a relatively unpleasant spectacle for the most part: a celebration of conformism, vulgarity and mediocrity.
Who wins the top awards and who doesn't at one of these affairs is largely the outcome of a months-long battle, going on behind the scenes, between rival studios that spend millions of dollars to promote their individual products.
The bestowing of the honorary award on Elia Kazan certainly represented the moral pivot of the ceremony.

The Academy Awards are the best pageantry the United States has, while serving absolutely no public interest.
And of course, all native Californians who have lived anywhere near the filmmaking industry understand that the outcome of the Awards is a political process based on the advertising budget behind the nominees.
The Academy Awards are the industry's opportunity to toot its own horn.

Despite all the controversy stirred by the decision of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to give director Elia Kazan an honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, Sunday’s 71st Academy Awards ceremony passed with no disruption and little commentary.
Clearly the Academy’s 39-member board (that voted unanimously to approve the award) miscalculated in assuming the movie industry’s shameful and hypocritical fllist war no longer matters.
And as the Academy was forced to recall, for all his great and lasting achievements in film and theater, Kazan is still remembered as Hollywood’s greatest stool pigeon.
