MATA Specifications: 754   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
754, a 19-ton, 48-foot, 54-seat streetcar was built in 1926 by American Car Company for Dallas Railway and Terminal Co. It was originally a "Peter Witt" center entrance car.
754 was on the active DR&T roster until the end of operations in January 1956.
754 spent its retirement years there serving as a playhouse for the Carpenter children and grandchildren.

RFC 754 J. Postel ISI 6 April 1979 Out-of-Net Host Addresses for Mail There is now interest in sustantially extending the scope of the computer mail system used in the ARPANET to allow communication of voice, fax, graphics, as well as text information between users in different networks as wells as within the ARPANET.

This is a major advantage of solution D. Postel [page 9] RFC 754 6 April 1979 Out-of-Net Host Addresses for Mail Please note that the syntax NET-USER@FWDR in the examples is not the only form that could be used.

 CGTalk - differences of 939 and 754
The main difference is that 754 socket is a Single Channel Ram CPU whilest the 939 counterpart is Dual Channel.
Some 754 have 1 meg caches some don't, the earlier 754 have 1 MB cache and the latter 754 only have 512 just like the 939 ones.
One advantage that 939 has over 754 is that it has longer Roadmap while the 754 is pretty at its end of life.

Oxygen Reservoir Kit for Uni-Vent 754   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
754 allows the clinician to deliver a greater range of oxygen concentrations to the patient when only a low pressure oxygen source for mechanical ventilation is available.
754 is designed with an internal air/oxygen blender that gives users the ability to deliver oxygen concentrations ranging from 21% to 100% provided the ventilator is connected to a high pressure oxygen source.
By attaching the Oxygen Reservoir Kit to the 754, you can oxygen-enrich the delivered gas and increase the range of oxygen concentrations while using a low pressure oxygen source.

PC Perspective / Amdmb Forums - 754 Lifecycle
The advantage of the 939 over the 754 is that the 939 runs a dual channel memory controller which is a few % faster.
PCI Express is also not limited by Socket 754, its the manufacturers that need to see the need for that in the "budget" Socket.
So in short the 754 cycle is short and will only be here to satisfy the budget needs of workstation required for an environment you are trying to transform towards 64 bit architecture.

Java Primitive Data Types - Reals - IEEE 754
While knowledge of the standard may no longer be crucial for programmers due to abstraction of this detail it is placed here for completeness and as a reference in case the need arises to parse raw data and the result is not as expected.
The IEEE 754 Standard uses 1-plus form of the binary normalized fraction (rounded).
Interestingly, there are more distinct Java floats (IEEE 754 single precision rounded) in [-1 to +1] than in the rest of the number line, i.e.

PEP 754 -- IEEE 754 Floating Point Special Values
The IEEE 754 standard defines a set of binary representations and algorithmic rules for floating point arithmetic.
For example, the expression "float(1e3000)", which is large enough to generate an overflow, should return a string representation corresponding to IEEE 754 positive infinity.
The reference implementation is provided in the module "fpconst" [1], which is written in pure Python by taking advantage of the "struct" standard module to directly set or test for the bit patterns that define IEEE 754 special values.

[H]ard|Forum - For those who think 754 is dead...
The 754 still has the most mature motherboards and is cheaper than the 939's.
The main thing that attracts me to 754 is that DFI board and how detailed the bios is, and I know that if I want to upgrade to a pci-e graphics card in the future I will have to get a new motherboard anyway.
754 currently has better boards (namely the dfi lanparty) then the 939, however if you plan on upgrading your cpu within the next year or so, 939 would be the way to go, cause it appears that 754 is gonna be delegated to the semprons.

Nvidia Nforce 4 comes in Socket 754 and 939
This has to be good news for early Athlon 64 supporters who bought their CPUs in the old days when socket 754 was a lonely Athlon 64 socket but now it's became obsolete and lost the game against more advanced socket 939.
Sempron users - at least the ones that are using Sempron's that are using 754 - can also celebrate since they will have an option to plug their CPUs in those boards.
It's good to know that the early Athlon 64 adaptors and all the others who are using socket 754 will get their chance.

PimpRig Forums - Upgrading to 754?????   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The primary difference between the 754 and the 939 is that the 939 supports dual channel memory, whereas the 754 only supports single channel.
The 754 is currently being phased out and the smart move, if you can afford it, is to jump the 754 track and move straight to the 939 setup.
In real world performance though, the 754 is a screamer, you will pay about 10-15% more for 939, and get about the same increase in performance, minus the fact you need a PCI express vid card.

as far as chipsets go, there is NO difference between 754 and 939; that is the beauty of HyperTransport.
Also, most of the board design between 754 and 939 can be shared with good design; this makes it cheaper to do both sockets.
Socket 754 is perfectly fine and faster than 939 for mid range CPU's because of it's higher mhz to make up for low ram bandwidth, mhz is generally more important than cache and bandwidth on the A64.

As a scientific programming environment, full support for the IEEE 754 standard should be a requirement.
It is extremely unlikely that Java will be run on a chip that does not support IEEE 754, as this standard has been around for nearly 20 years.
However, a method could be provided in the Double class returning a boolean indicating whether rounding direction support is available on this platform, or the accessor methods could throw an exception.

Part of this means providing support for the IEEE 754 exception flags.
However, a method could be provided in the Double class returning a boolean indicating whether sticky bit support is available on this platform, or the accessor methods could throw an exception.
The challenge to supporting the IEEE 754 sticky bits is not adding the methods to query and set the state, the challenge is for the rest of the system and libraries to cooperate to make the reading of the state predictable and therefore useful.

Socket 939 has a few more kinks than Socket 754 because it is newer, but most of the problems seemed to be solved (most of the problems I've heard about are because of the new 90nm processors).

All of these factors have encouraged some manufacturers to introduce new Socket 754 motherboards aimed at the enthusiast even after the Socket 939 was launched and processors were available.
