75th Anniversary Academy Award acting category winners Chris Cooper, Actor in a Supporting Role, "Adaptation;" Actress in a Supporting Role Catherine Zeta-Jones, "Chicago;" Nicole Kidman, Actress in a Leading Role, "The Hours;" Adrien Brody, Actor in a Leading Role, "The Pianist."
Instead of the glitter of a diamond anniversary, the awards went tentatively forward in the face of munitions raining down on the desert dictatorship of Iraq - by show night almost on Baghdad's doorstep.
The red carpet was shortened to just a few yards, most of the world's press was disinvited, the fans were nowhere to be found and hundreds of thousands of viewers stayed glued to the night-vision green glow of wall-to-wall live cable coverage of Gulf War II.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences celebrated its diamond anniversary in 2003 and what would have been the usual night of glitz and glamour was tempered by the fact that the war in Iraq had started just days before.
The nominations for the 75th Annual Academy Awards® were announced at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater on Tuesday, February 11, 2003.
The Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements in 2002 were presented on Sunday, March 23, 2003, at the beautiful Kodak Theatre at Hollywood and Highland.

In spite of of the red carpet being mothballed this year and the so-called sobriety of the event due to the Iraqi conflict, the 75th Academy Awards ceremony, held March 23rd, again featured the best, and the worst, of what we have come to expect from the Oscars.
However, the winner of the Best Director award was not Chicago's Rob Marshall, The Hours's Stephen Daldry, or even Pedro Almodovar, who had won in the Original Screenplay category for Talk to Her a few minutes earlier, but the absentee Roman Polanski, for the Holocaust drama The Pianist.
This year being the 75th anniversary of Oscar, the ceremony was the occasion for the inevitable reunion of all actors (and only actors) who won acting Oscars in the past.

Reading rapidly from a piece of paper, he dedicated his award for best original screenplay (for Talk to Her) to “all the people who are raising their voice in favor of peace, human rights, democracy, and international law, things that have been violated recently,” obviously referring to the Bush administration’s policy.
In terms of the awards handed out, there were a number of surprises worth noting at the 75th Awards ceremony.
The award to Polanski was greeted with a standing ovation; the Polish-born director has been in exile since fleeing the US in 1977 over a statutory rape charge.

It's just as obvious that the most prevalent issue in the awards ceremony this year was to be the war in Iraq as it was after the Oscar ceremony in 1999 that the biggest rivalry of all was between two equally powerful films, Saving Private Ryan and Shakespeare In Love.
The Academy Awards are a time of goodwill and appreciation of the wonderful movies that deserve to be celebrated because they took advantage of the enormous impact that films can have on their audiences.
The movies awarded this year, with only one or two exceptions, have little to nothing to do with the current political climate, and I just wish that the winners could have concentrated more on appreciating their recognition for their accomplishments than on taking political stands.
