Topic: 773 Irmintraud

TAGISH LAKE PHOTO   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Among D-class asteroids with similar reflectance spectra to Tagish Lake, 773 Irmintraud and 368 Haidea provide the best matches in the visible-near-infrared range.
The fact that 773 Irmintraud is located closer to the 7:3 mean motion resonance of Jupiter than 368 Haidea is located to the 2:1 resonance may have a bearing on their possible association.
Also noteworthy is the finding that 773 Irmintraud, 308 Polyxo, and the C-class asteroid 511 Davida all contain hydrated materials as contained in Tagish Lake.

OCCULTATION BY (773) IRMINTRAUD - 2003 JUN 14
UPDATE: 2003 MAY 15, 03:21 UT On the evening of 2003 Jun 14 UT, the 95 km diameter asteroid (773) Irmintraud will occult a 9.8 mag star in the constellation Lupus for observers along a path across New Zealand.
In the case of an occultation, the combined light of the asteroid and the star will drop by 3.2 mag to 13.0 mag (the magnitude of the asteroid) for at most 9.3 seconds.

 Planetary Society: Tagish Lake Meteorite
One of the D-class asteroids, 773 Irmintraud, lies very close to a Kirkwood gap - a region of the asteroid belt that has been cleared of most debris by Jupiter's strong gravity.
A large impact could have flung debris off of 773 Irmintraud.
While this sounds like a reasonable theory, it will take much more research to determine if such a journey from the asteroid belt, to a Kirkwood gap to Earth is possible, and if the Tagish Lake meteorite and asteroid 773 Irmintraud are indeed an exact match.

The first detection of water absorption on a D type asteroid
The D type asteroids are among the darkest objects known in our solar system.
Here, we present infrared spectra of one of the main-belt D type asteroids, 773 Irmintraud.
In contrast to previous observations of D type asteroids, we found a gap of reflectance around 3 μm in wavelength.

IOTA/IOTA-ES occultation update for (773) Irmintraud / HIP 186 = SAO 128544 on July 20/21, 2004 visible from Africa, NE Algeria, NE Spain, France, SW England and Ireland Summary
In the night of July 20/21, 2004 a bright 6.3 mag star HIP 186 = SAO 128544 will be occulted by a 99 km asteroid (773) Irmintraud.
This update is based on USNO/Flagstaff and TMO astrometry for the asteroid and Hipparcos star position.

 Terry Mosely's Bulletins
The star is magnitude 6m.4, and will be occulted by 773 Irmintraud, magnitude 13.8, so the drop in combined brightness will be 7.4 magnitudes - in effect the star will totally disappear for up to 10 seconds or so!
The following details were sent to me by Tolis Christo at Armagh Observatory, who will co-ordinate any observations "Hi Terry, I don't know whether you've made any plans for the Irmintraud occultation on the night of the 20th July.
We here intend to undertake a little expedition and travel to the centre of the track; the exact location is to be decided by the weather at the last minute.
