78 Derngate was not only Mackintosh’s last significant commission, but also a most unusual and intriguing one, which helps modify the modern mythical interpretation of his career.
78 Derngate is a house of the 1820s in the centre of a short red-brick late Georgian terrace.
While the new front door of no 78, with its decorative coloured glass and details similar to those on the west wing of the Glasgow School of Art is clearly Mackintosh’s work, the adjacent projecting bay window with its leaded-light windows may well be Anderson’s.

At first sight, 78 Derngate looks like a house that life has passed by - a narrow, brick Georgian terraced house, somewhat sidelined on what is now a busy traffic artery in and out of Northampton town centre.
Two years later, the 78 Derngate Northampton Trust was formed, taking a 99-year sub-lease and embarking on a £1.5million restoration of the house, using the adjoining property, number 80, as an exhibition and circulation space.
