 Boeing 787 / 7E7 Dreamliner
The other member of the 7E7 family is a stretch version that will be about 20-feet (six meters) longer than the baseline and shorter-range 7E7 and be capable of flights of 8,300 nautical miles (15,400 kilometers).
Final assembly of the 7E7 could be cut from 13-17 days [needed for the 747 and 777] to as few as three days, with employees snapping together large components rather than riveting and welding an entire aluminum plane.
The 7E7 program would mean 800 to 1,200 initial aerospace jobs, but perhaps a couple thousand more jobs by 2008 when the plane begins service, as many as 3,500 related aerospace jobs and a payroll of $600 million that would impact up to 13,000 people who provide goods and services.

Prior to January 28, 2005, the 787 was known as the developmental designator 7E7.
On April 26, 2005, one year to the day after the launch of the program, the final look of the external 787 design was frozen [1].
On April 26, 2004, the Japanese airline All Nippon Airways (ANA) became the launch customer for the 787, then still-known as the 7E7, announcing a firm order for 50 aircraft to be delivered beginning in 2008.

At a press briefing outside closed-door talks with dozens of potential buyers of the 200- to 300-seat 7E7 jet family, a key Boeing official said the program was building momentum as the board of directors considers endorsing the project next month.
Boeing claims the 7E7 would cut fuel burn by 20% over current aircraft and save airlines 10% on overall operating costs, citing new, fuel-sipping engines and lightweight materials that will also cut maintenance costs.
Airbus has not yet laid out a formal response to the 7E7, although industry officials say the European company is planning a series of airline briefings.

 Airbus taunts Boeing over 7E7
Boeing is touting the twin-engine 7E7 as a replacement for the twin-engine 767 as well as the twin-engine A330-200.
The 7E7 is so similar to the A330-200, Brown said, that Boeing had to change the way it looks by adding such features as a sharklike tail.
Depending on the 7E7 price, he said, Airbus calculations show that the range of savings in direct operating costs would be no more than 1 percent better than the A330-200 and could be as much as 4 percent worse.

The steep price of developing the 7E7, which Boeing has not disclosed but industry experts have pegged at about $10 billion, is putting added pressure on the U.S. manufacturer to get solid market backing for the project.
Many 7E7 suppliers have agreed to fund development of the components they will build, reducing Boeing's risk and its upfront costs of launching the aircraft.
Aimed at the middle of the market with about 250 seats, the 7E7 is promising airlines a 10 percent savings on operating costs, a popular pitch at a time when no-frills carriers are driving down fares and squeezing margins.

The mid-sized wide-body 7E7, to be known as the "Dreamliner" is due to enter airline service in 2008.
Without the 7E7, analysts say Boeing would be relegated to also-ran status in the two-horse race with Airbus, which has become the world's most prolific jetliner maker with a backlog of 1,467 jet orders compared with Boeing's 1,112.
The 7E7 would replace the slow-selling 757, which Boeing is discontinuing, and the 767 line, which has slowed to just one aircraft per month to sustain production until a controversial order for 100 U.S. Air Force fuel tankers is finalized.

Boeing could jeopardize the launch funding of the new 7E7 aircraft should it press for an investigation of government subsidies received by rival Airbus because Boeing itself has received government subsides that violate world-trade agreements, according to David Pritchard, a research associate at the Canada-United States Trade Center in the UB Department of Geography.
