7z - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
7z is a compressed archive file format that supports several different data compression algorithms.
The format was initially implemented by the 7-Zip archiver; both the file format and 7-Zip's implementation are publicly available under the GNU LGPL licence.
The 7z format supports encryption with the AES algorithm with a 256-bit key.

Hydrogenaudio Forums > Better Zip Compression
Conclusion: 7z format is best, ZIP created by 7-zip is smaller than zip created with any other program.
But I recommend you Zip with the 7z program cause it saves some space and since bandwidth is valuable on the net.
For personal backups 7z is fine, but when it comes to distribution of the files, it becomes a hassle.

PowerArchiver Forums - [Bug] Encrypted 7z archives
If you open an encrypted 7z archive PA does not prompt for the password, it shows an empty archive instead.
The fact is that, when you know that PA supports 7z, you think it's a "full" support..you can't know something has not been implemented yet..
And let me say that, if you open a 7z encrypted archive and you see an empty archive, you think that PA can handle that but fails in asking the password...

 7z file - Hydrogenaudio Forums
Let's say the.rar was 5,400kb instead of 540kb, and the 7z would be 4,800kb, the maybe you'd say "wow, 600kb smaller!".
Also, 7z uses significantly more CPU time for compression and decompression.
For small files it's an acceptable trade off, but with large files, you quickly learn it's just not worth it for those few extra saved bytes.

 7z plugin 1.0.1.0 - Total Commander
7za.exe can be found in 7z installation package.
Small files are ok, but when 7z is busy for a while it would be nice to see how long it is taking.
And one more minor issue, the plugin takes up 100% of my CPU while the 7z GUI stays at 80%..

The Wandering Oddity - GoodMerge   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
It takes a ROM image collection (either raw or compressed) and a “GoodHave.txt” file and produces a number of 7z, zip, or RAR archives with all the files associated with a particular game stored in one file.
Currently, there are two major methods for storage of ROM images: one ROM image per zip file, and one solid archive for the entire collection.
I'm wondering what the easiest way is to scan a GoodMerged 7z directory with GoodTools once it is compressed.

The TA Spring Project :: View topic - Test of compression formats of TAS maps and 3Dobjects
For 7-zip was used 7z format, LZMA compression, dictionary size 16MB, word size 96, solid archive type, selfextracting
So if see an archive ending in 7s and my usual file archive can't handle it, I'll probably wonder what is it, then leave for later (later as in never).
We don't need to use the entire 7z file system to use the 7z compression.

PowerArchiver Forums - 7z shell extensions
however if i select 7z + options and then click on the 7zi file is created ok no problems
the "profile1" for 7z is set to Ultra so this *may* be the default which is used in shell context menu.
When you first install PowerArchiver, it will create a default compression profile for each format.

what do I do with .7z.001 files? - DCEmu :: The Homebrew & Gaming Network :: PSP Dreamcast Nintendo DS Wii GP2X Xbox ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
I know that.7z files are like zip files, but when I try open them with WinRar, it says "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged" Can anyone offer any suggestions where I'm going wrong, or if I need different compression/decompression software to put these together into a.cdi file?
Never heard of them splitted before, but 7z is 7-zip's archive.

If it ain't broke, TWEAK IT Registered Linux user # 170078
Initially I thought the extension was wrong and tried to open it by assigning a different extension, but I have several files all stored as 7z, so I'm pretty sure the extension is meant to be 7z.
Thanks again, I'll post back if I get it working.
