  DVD Review: 8 Crazy Nights
As for "8 Crazy Nights", the fact that two of the main characters - Whitey and his sister, Eleanore (both voiced by Sandler) have voices that aren't funny and terribly shrill doesn't help, either.
VIDEO: "8 Crazy Nights" is presented in both 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and 1.33:1 full frame by Columbia/Tristar.
"8 Crazy Nights" could have been a sharply funny look at the holidays from Sandler, but it instead largely seems like a collection of jokes that weren't good enough to make it into Sandler's feature films.

The film is set in a small New England town called Dukesberry, the kind where everyone waves to each other in the town square and is well aware of Davey, the local hellraiser who can usually be found egging someone's house or sleeping off a hangover in the drunk tank.
The crazy nights begin with the opening of the movie, in which Davey downs four 110-proof scorpion bowls, sneaks out on the check, and trashes the town while the cops chase after him.
Most of the scenes take place at night, too, which brings into effect a lot of fls and purples that showier animation might try to circumvent.

Due to 8 Crazy Nights' short running length of 75 minutes, the distributor attached a two minute, live-action short to be shown before the main feature.
The main character is a jackass caught in a state of arrested development and a significant portion of the on-screen talent is comprised of Saturday Night Live alumni.
The only time 8 Crazy Nights comes close to hitting a comedic or satirical target is during the offbeat musical numbers.

 Modamag.com | 8 Crazy Nights (Movie Review)
The animated “8 Crazy Nights” brings that laugh-free work to the theaters, in what is easily Sandler’s worst film.
Also built around a series of lewd, Broadway-style musical numbers, “Nights” doesn’t quite have the level of writing “South Park” had, nor the R-rating or satiric aim to fully explore the depths of obscenity.
While it may not be entirely funny, “8 Crazy Nights” is, at the very least, bright and colorful, with the songs adding energy to its dilapidated engine.

He's always in trouble with the police and on the first night of Chanukah he goes on a drunken binge that starts with him skipping out on his drink bill at a local Chinese restaurant and ends with him crashing a snow mobile into the town's menorah and Santa ice sculptures.
Chanukah is reduced to being a holiday that comes slightly before Christmas, one that Jews celebrate with 8 nights of presents.
Theme number 2 of the movie is that it's important to cry because "alcohol just numbs the pain but doesn't make it go away." Parents will have to think long and hard if that's what they want their children to learn from a holiday film.

Film Blather: Adam Sandler's 8 Crazy Nights   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
8 Crazy Nights is an unfortunate return to form for Adam Sandler, so wonderful in the upbeat Punch-Drunk Love that I was quixotically hoping he would continue to take on strange, unexpected challenges.
8 Crazy Nights is typical of other Sandler films in that it has a snide, hipper-than-thou cynicism towards its own material while still expecting us to take it seriously.
Pardon the cynicism, but 8 Crazy Nights strikes me as a calculated strategy to draw ever younger audiences to Sandler's brand of humor, a prospect that is disturbing to say the least.

Being the first vulgar style animated movie since South Park, 8 Crazy Nights is already getting a reputation as being a poor imitation of the often praised South Park: Bigger, Longer, Un-Cut.
In 8 Crazy Nights, Adam Sandler provides the inspiration and the voice for Davey Stone, a troubled fellow who is on his last chance.
After causing thousands of dollars of damage on the first night of Hanukah, in the town of Dukeberry, he's been placed under the watch of Whitey (voiced by Sandler also).

Sandler's low-brow standards are applied to a seasonal 'toon unfit for families or able-minded adults in '8 Crazy Nights'
He winds up holding hands with a young widow whose kid is in the basketball program, not because he's done anything to make himself seem like a good catch for a single mom, but because schlub movie heroes need girlfriends for their hackneyed happy endings.
This guy is a worthless bum, and the fact that Sandler expects audiences to swallow his disingenuous change of heart as some kind of holiday warm-fuzzy shows just how little respect the actor has for the people who pay to see his movies.

Staring a jail term in the face thanks to his latest bout of crime, he’s saved at the right moment by infectiously odd and precariously old, Whitey, a sweet little old youth basketball league referee, who suggests punishment would be better served on the basketball coach.
As it turns out, the crazy old character ends up doing a lot more than putting him front row center at a game — he ends up taking him in too — which causes more than a little strain between Davey and the oddities that are Whitey, and hilariously anomalous sister Eleanor.
While it’s nowhere near as polished or well-performed as Sandler’s “Punch Drunk Love”, “8 Crazy Nights” is a return to the kind of Sandler, we first saw in gems like “Billy Madison” and “Happy Gilmore” - Offensive to some, hilarious to others.

Adam Sandler's 8 Crazy Nights (2003) Filmjudge DVD Review
Having opened as the #1 animated comedy in November 2002, Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights promises the quintessential Sandler humour that ranges from subtle to the extreme and everything in between.
Originally written for "Saturday Night Live," Sandler's new version of his beloved and nearly classic Chanukah song, specially written for the movie and coupled with his talent to voice multiple characters, makes for a kosher comedy this season.
Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights, available on special edition DVD in its original theatrical version as well as the full frame format, will be loaded with special features including deleted scenes, cast and technical commentary, an insider look into the holiday songs and character featurettes.

So arrives the execrable "Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights," a humor-free animated musical that's as close to Sandler's own juvenile sensibility as Paul Thomas Anderson's delightful film was removed from it.
Director Seth Kearney and the rest of the "creative" team behind "Eight Crazy Nights" eschew the potential for inventiveness offered by animation, staging every scene as if the characters were actors standing around on a set.
But all the songs in "Eight Crazy Nights" comment directly on the plot, robbing them of any surprise or ingenuity.

Adam Sandler's animated comedy, "Eight Crazy Nights," may be the worst holiday-themed film to come along since "Silent Night, Deadly Night," an '80s horror flick in which a Santa hacked people to death with an ax.
Had Sandler, a comedian with legions of young fans, combined his trademark detention hall humor with a clear moral, "Eight Crazy Nights" might've been a sweet, non-preachy fable that kids and parents could enjoy.
So when I write that "Eight Crazy Nights" is a terrible holiday comedy, it's not because I don't get Sandler.

 Adam Sandler's 8 Crazy Nights
In the contemporary animated holiday musical fable Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights, Adam Sandler gives voice to several distinct and unconventional characters, including the film's antagonizing protagonist Davey Stone, a young man who hates the holidays and is determined that no one else in the town of Dukesberry is going to enjoy them either.
On the first night of Hanukah, the perpetually grumpy Davey goes on a rowdy rampage and is arrested.
Sandler, who had dabbled in flash animation previously, decided that Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights should be a fully-animated feature that would have the feel of a live-action movie, "but without any of the limitations of live-action," according to Franck.
