		Asteroid 8 Flora was discovered on October 18, 1847 by British astronomer John R. Hind in London, and named for the Roman goddess of flowers and springtime.
		Flora has a period of 3 years, 97 days and, not surprisingly for one of the first asteroids to be discovered, is fairly large--about 101.3 miles in diameter.
		Astrologically, Flora indicates floweriness, floridness, ornateness, climactic growth or manifestation, lushness or aridity and sterility, flower-child mentality, idealism or ruthlessness.

		Williams in 1992 even suggested that the Flora family could be broken up into 10 separate families suggesting that many collisional events could have caused this splitting.

	Oct. 29th Flora Occultation Timed in New Mexico
		SAO 97355 by (8) Flora on October 29 from 7 stations in New Mexico are fit well by an ellipse of dimensions 140 +/-2 km by 184 +/-12 km, significantly larger than the predicted diameter of 135 km.
		Possibly the asteroid was near a maximum of its light curve because the occultation magnitude drop seemed smaller than the predicted 1.1 mag.; current light curve observations are sought to see at which phase of it the occultation occurred.
		Paul has this month observed 2 occultations by (8) Flora, and I observed 2 asteroidal occultations, each from 2 widely separated stations [the first being the (634) Ute occultation of an 11th-mag.

		It is probably a mixture of silicate rock and nickel-iron metals.
		The name Flora was proposed by John Herschel, from Flora, the Latin goddess of flowers and gardens, wife of Zephyrus (the personnification of the West wind), mother of Spring, and whose Greek equivalent is Chloris (who has her own asteroid, 410 Chloris).

		the `observed' Flora family was indentified by a hierarchical clustering method (Zappala et al.) on a dense background of asteroids in inner belt while for the synthetic family, we show all asteroids ejected in the breakup.
		Obtaining the large orbital dispersion of the Flora family and explaining several particular features of the Koronis, Maria and Eunomia families seems to indicate that our model is valid: there is a significant mobility in the asteroid belt due to the Yarkovsky force and resonances.
