JIVEMagazine.com - Rabbit, Run: Of James Joyce, Eminem, and 8 Mile
As such, his lyrical content throughout the 8 Mile soundtrack is uncharacteristically adult, not because of his foul mouth but because of his intelligence, and his powerful performance in the film shows just how close to the bone Eminem is willing to go to prove himself.
The most important point to note about 8 Mile as a film is something that will probably and unfortunately bypass most of the audience the it initially attracts: the script is littered with references to postmodern author John Updike’s Rabbit, Run.
And it’s a shame, because 8 Mile as a film is a powerful, inspirational piece of work, as are the tracks Eminem recorded for the soundtrack.

 Modamag.com 8 Mile (Movie Review)
One of the main surprises of “8 Mile” is just how ingratiating a film it is. Eminem is known globally as the wicked prince of rap, yet this film is evenly layered with comedy, performance, sexuality, and a free spirit I assume will catch most by surprise.
Submersive location work is a Hanson specialty, and his intimate take on the 8 Mile area adds a lot to the film’s flavor and a little to its authenticity.
But even with the odd couple pairing, the two have come together to form “8 Mile,” an unlikely but wholly entertaining film that should silence all those who object to either of these two artists’ penchants for monkey business.

For one, 8 Mile might have the most believable, most powerful representation of an automobile factory of any film in the last twenty years, and it still manages to use the location for sophisticated, plot driving drama.
All in all, the thing that really defines 8 Mile is how committed to this idea the cast and crew must have been in order to make this film.
This film says something about rap and the human experience that hasn't been articulated this well many times before; it bridges the gap between rap and poetry in a big way, and makes that gap look a lot smaller.

At the same factory, Jimmy has "8 Mile's" most curious scene, a rap battle where he comes to the defense of a maligned gay fellow worker, a sequence that feels like it has more to do with the star's well-publicized difficulties with the gay community than furthering the film's plot.
Though some of "8 Mile's" realistic touches get wearing -- there's more use of "dog," as in "yo, dog" than in the annual meeting of the Westminster Kennel Club -- the film is never more real than when Jimmy unloads his anger on someone close to him, a frequent occurrence.
When "8 Mile" begins, he's carrying everything he owns in a black plastic trash bag and is about to move back in with his impecunious mother, Stephanie (Kim Basinger, who won an Oscar in Hanson's "L.A. Confidential"), and her loutish boyfriend, Greg (Michael Shannon).

 DVD Review: 8 Mile
Eminem, a white but legitimately rooted underclass rapper, stars in a fun little Widescreen movie from Universal, 8 Mile (21981, $27), about a rap subculture called 'battling,' in which two people, who have apparently memorized rhyming dictionaries, face off and extemporaneously insult one another in verse.
The film is an imitation of a low budget, inner city beginner's film, but it was directed by an 'A list' director, Curtis Hanson, and it is just a bit too clean around the edges to hit you the way it pretends that it wants to.
Unfortunately, we don't know the names of these brilliant but forgotten authors.

Certainly, working on the “wrong” side of 8 Mile Road has reinforced my belief that the gift of shalom Christ died for, the shalom God desires to spread over his city, is a multifaceted reality of regeneration that includes not only personal salvation, but also the blessings of prosperity.
Such a limited understanding of the transcendence of the cross of Christ is debilitating, as a tour along 8 Mile Road in Detroit readily suggests.

Eminem pulled it off -- even though "8 Mile" was essentially a rap version of "The Karate Kid" -- because he had an inescapable charisma, an intensity about him and an innate ability to connect with his audience in a way that was evident even from his earliest music videos.
Mainly, "Get Rich" proves once again, as in "Glitter," that standing in front of a camera and portraying a thinly veiled version of yourself is harder than it sounds.
