8-bit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computer architecture, 8-bit is an adjective used to describe integers, memory addresses or other data units that are at most 8 bits (1 octet) wide, or to describe CPU and ALU architectures based on registers, address buses, or data buses of that size.
CPU can be classified on the bases of the Data it can access in a single operation.A 8-bit processor can access 8 bit of data in single operation.A 16-bit processor can access16 bit of data in single operation.

8-bit clean - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Eight-bit clean" is a term which describes a computer system that deals correctly with extended character sets which (unlike ASCII) use all eight bits of a byte, such as the ISO 8859 series and the UTF-8 encoding of Unicode.
This leaves the top bit of each byte free for use as a parity bit or some kind of flag bit.
Up to the early 1990s, which is much longer than when it became popular, many programs and communications systems used to assume that all characters have codes in the range 0 to 127.

 rfc2279.txt
UTF-8, the object of this memo, uses all bits of an octet, but has the quality of preserving the full US-ASCII range: US-ASCII characters are encoded in one octet having the normal US- ASCII value, and any octet with such a value can only stand for an US-ASCII character, and nothing else.
The remaining bit(s) of that octet contain bits from the value of the character to be encoded.
The following octet(s) all have the higher-order bit set to 1 and the following bit set to 0, leaving 6 bits in each to contain bits from the character to be encoded.

Applied Color Theory - Field Test of 8-bit vs. 16-bit
You can make a high bit mask feathered by feathering a hard selection (loaded off a reg bit file) in high bit and then pull a linear curve in the mask to make it white...but I have not tested if this high bit created mask is better than one in 8 bit alpha.
More than 8 bits pre color is all you need and many capture devices deal with 10 bit, 12 bit, 14 bit, 16 bit etc. Photoshop takes all such 3high bit2 data and simply calls it 316 bit2 which is fine.
For the vast majority of the users on this list, 8 bit is going to be the way to go since pushing a lot of files through the workflow is bad enough when they are half the size of a 16 bit file.

 Glossary - 8-bit Color Images
It is common for each component intensity to be stored as an 8-bit integer, and so each pixel requires 24 bits to completely and accurately specify its color.
Storing 24 bits for every pixel leads to very large image files that with current technology are cumbersome to store and manipulate.
Full RGB color requires that the intensities of three color components be specified for each and every pixel.

More Than a Bit of a Difference: 8-bit Versus 16-bit - Photo Tips @ Earthbound Light
Thus, both are off by a factor or three (8 bits per channel times 3 channels = 24 bits total, and 16x3 = 48 bits).
Instead of counting the number of bits per channel, they are named after the total number of bits in all three channels together.
If an image is a bit underexposed and lacking in contrast, it may only use values between 0 and 199 perhaps (200 out of the possible 256 values).

 UTR #26: Compatibility Encoding Scheme for UTF-16: 8-Bit (CESU-8)
It should be noted that this bit distribution table is identical to that of UTF-8 except that the input value is a sequence of UTF-16 code units, not a scalar value, and that a four-byte transformation is disallowed.
The bit pattern 1111xxxx is illegal in any CESU-8 byte, effectively prohibiting the occurrence of UTF-8 four-byte surrogates in CESU-8.
The resulting data stream is encoded into an eight-bit form using the bit distribution table in definition 2.2.

Atari also produced a number of other tape drives for use in eastern Europe where they continued to sell into the late 1980s due to their low cost.
The 800 was rather complex and expensive to build, while the 400 didn't compete technically with some of the newer machines appearing in the early 1980s, so in 1982 Atari started the "Sweet 16" project to address these issues.
