In a sense 8 femmes is the ultimate parody of the kind of films the French directors of the New Wave rebelled against — films which were merely vehicles for popular film stars, almost totally bereft of any intellectual or artistic content.
The appeal of 8 femmes is that it is the opposite of what it appears to be (namely, a straightforward spoof).
Ozon’s decision to cast her in 8 femmes in the film’s most over-the-top character was a calculated risk - he envisaged Huppert as a playing a female equivalent of Louis de Funès - but the gamble paid off.

Berlin 2002 REVIEW: Celebrating the Artificial; Ozon Fills the Screen with "8 Femmes"
"8 Femmes" is populated uniquely by the eight females figured in the title -- a matriarch, played by the 40's grand dame Danielle Darrieux, two embattled sisters (Catherine Deneuve and Isabelle Huppert), Deneuve's daughters (Virginie Ledoyen and a less well-known Ludivine Sagnier), Deneuve's vampy sister-in-law Fanny Ardant, and two maids (Emanuelle Béart and Firmine Richard).
It is his murder around which the whole of "8 Femmes" turns, however, and thus he functions more than a bit like Mr.
Kaplan, the absent center of Hitchcock's masterpiece "North By Northwest." Owing to the superficial similarity of the murder mystery motif, facile comparisons with Altman's "Gosford Park" have abounded here (where the latter is also showing), but the two films couldn't be more different in aim or method.

8 Women is a pastiche of an Agatha Christie murder mystery, classic Hollywood musicals such as the films of Vincente Minnelli, and trashy modern camp like Wild Things.

 BBC - Films - review - 8 Women (8 femmes)
As if the mounting ridiculousness of each confession and revelation wasn't enough, each woman has her own song-and-dance routine through which to indulge herself and expound her character, with varying degrees of humour and emotion.
From its elegantly vintage set to the 50s-style Technicolor, "8 Women" oozes camp artifice as much as it does acting talent, with each woman sending up her public persona and revelling in the fabulousness of it all - a complete stylistic U-turn from Ozon's previous film, "Under the Sand".
Subtle it certainly isn't, but there's an underlying tenderness towards these fatal femmes and an upbeat humour that buoys "8 Women" and puts some oomph behind all the fluff.

Deneuve is excellent here as usual, however, transitioning back and forth between being a hard, bitter wife and mother to a woman fighting attraction to her sister-in-law Pierrette, whom she publicly scorns.
Fanny Ardent is very convincing as Pierrette, and she makes Pierrette appealing by exuding a warmth and vitality that contrasts sharply with the more somber countenance of the other women.

Conceptually speaking, Francois Ozon’s 8 Femmes (2002) should be a minor treat to any connoisseur of Classical Hollywood...
Although 8 Femmes is blessed with the presence of a handful of legendary actresses (Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Fanny Ardant), as well as respected veteran Emmanuelle Béart and promising up-and-comers, Ledoyen and Sagnier, their fine acting could not compensate for the fact that the color-coordinated sets appeared to be just that - sets.
Alas, 8 Femmes felt increasingly like an eye-catching vaudeville act exhaustingly extended to two hours.
