Four-track and 8-track cartridges coexisted on the marketplace for some time, with the 8-track format eventually defeating by attrition its look-alike cousin (before in turn being overtaken by the cassette format).
The tracks themselves (the portion of the magnetic tape holding the information) were only half as wide as those on 8-tracks, and cassette tape moved at half of 8-track's speed, combining for a very low perceived potential for sound reproduction.

8-track cartridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 8-track cartridge is an audio storage magnetic tape cartridge technology, popular from the late 1960s to the early 1980s.
The 8-track version simplified the mechanism by rolling the motorized metal capstan in the player against a pinch wheel installed inside the cartridge to pull the tape across the player's read head (in the earlier 4-track Stereo-Pak, the pinch wheel was part of the player and flipped into the cartridge through a hole).

 Eight track tape alignment instrument
Eight track tape cartridges and the tapes thereof tend to wear through use which results in malfunctioning and/or a poor quality of sound.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an eight track tape aligning instrument for insertion between a tape cartridge and its receiving cavity in a tape player so as to enable readjustment of the pressure between the magnetic tape and the capstan of a tape player.
It is customary for the magnetic tape to travel within the cartridge and be conveyed across head 14 at a speed of 33/4 inches per second, so it is essential that the tape be properly aligned therewith, with inward pressure of the cartridge pressing the cartridge wheel 17 and the tape against capstan 8.
