Anyone who has heard of the Shinkansen, would probably think of this type, which was the first one built for the opening of the new line in 1964, and whose front was patterned on the nose of the DC series airliners of the day.
The 200 series entered service on the Tohoku Shinkansen in 1982, and whilst the design was similar to the 0 series, modifications were made to suit the colder environments it ran in.
The Akita Shinkansen sets are painted white and silver gray with a magenta stripe, and the Yamagata Shinkansen sets are painted silver and light gray with a green stripe.

With the first stage of the Kyushu Shinkansen due to open next year, it will be interesting to see if JR Kyushu is able to mix style and speed; from the information I've seen so far, it looks like they may well succeed.
The seats are upholstered in the soothing colours and 'natural' designs of traditional Nishijin brocade- again, very different to the businesslike interior of the other Shinkansen- and there are JR Kyushu's trademark design touches all the way through the train.
When I travel by Shinkansen, I've always got the feeling that speed is first and foremost, with the enjoyment of the journey a distant second, but with the Tsubame, there seems to be at least an equal emphasis on making the journey itself a memorable experience.

THE 40th anniversary of the world's first high-speed railway, the Tokaido Shinkansen, was marked in Tokyo on November 9 by a conference staged by JR Central and JR West on the environmental benefits of high-speed rail.
Masayuki Matsumoto, president of JR Central, said that the Tokaido Shinkansen had an 81% share of the air-rail market between Tokyo and Osaka.
"Our most recent series 700 trains run at 270km/h yet consume 16% less energy than the original series 0 rolling stock running at 220km/h." The new N700, which is due to enter revenue service in 2007, is expected to be 10% more energy efficient.
