  Yasso 800s
He was training for a marathon later in the fall, so two days before Portland he went to a nearby track and ran Yasso 800s.
Between the 800s, jog for the same number of minutes it took you to run your repeats.
The last workout of Yasso 800s should be completed at least 10 days before your marathon, and 14 to 17 days would probably be better.

Cool Running :: Yasso 800s   (Site not responding. Last check: )
First, 800s are OK as a repetition length in speedwork for marathoners, but the recoveries are too long and the session is therfore not challenging enough.
The efficacy of the Yasso 800s vis-a-vis other workouts will depend in part on your own recent running background (read: mileage) and on your basic abilities (i.e., do you have more talent for middle distances or are you a natural long distance runner?).
As a general rule, though, Yasso 800s are slightly too fast relative to the pace which brings you to your lactate threshold (LT), and they are too slow relative to the pace which elicits your VO2max.

Why Yasso 800s Are Overrated   (Site not responding. Last check: )
There are a number of factors we have to keep in mind when considering whether Yasso 800s are really a good idea.
Doing 800s at times in a training plan is not a bad idea.
However, devoting a workout every week for 2 months, give or take, to 800s is taking time and energy away from workouts that can be much more effective in preparing for the demands of a long event like the marathon.

coffee grounds: Two cheers for Yasso 800s   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The problem with Yasso 800s is that either the recoveries are too long, or the repeats are too short.
If you've come this far you probably know what Yasso 800s are.
If you're doing your 800s in 4:00 or over then the 800s are probably OK for you.
