Lloyd Borrett - Computing - Articles - The Intel 80386 SX
Much has been said recently about the introduction of the Intel 80386SX or P9, but as usual little has been said about the real benefits of the 80386SX, and where it fits into the new generation of personal computers and PC based solutions that are coming our way.
The Intel 80386SX is to the 80386 as the original 8088 is to the 8086.
However, the performance difference between the 80386 and the 80386SX is not as great as that between the 8086 and the 8088.

The W/R- output pin 25 of the 80386SX processor generates the W/R# signal which is input to the W/R- pin 41 of the 80387SX co-processor.
When the 80386SX plug-in module is installed, pin 114 of connector 114 is grounded, so that the second input of gate 331 is driven low, into its active state.
By virtue of the bus connection in which the HLDA signal from the 80386SX and the HLDA signal, which may be output from buffer 321, the disablement of buffer 321 relinquishes control of the hold acknowledge function to the new (80386SX) module.

Intel 80386 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Building a program for the 80286 was often much harder.
Late in the 80386's production run, Intel introduced the 80386SX, which was meant to be a low cost version of the 386 line.
The SX series of chips was 32-bit internally, but had a 16-bit external bus (in much the same way that the 8088 in the original IBM PC was a lower cost version of the 8086).

The 80386SX, a variant of the 32-bit 80386 type which uses a 16-bit data bus rather than the full 32-bit bus of the normal 80386.
The 80386SX is also found in many personal computers that use the same basic motherboard design as the 80286.
At the time that the 80386SX was popular, most applications, including Windows, required fewer than 16M bytes of memory, so the 80386SX is a popular and a less costly version of the 80386 microprocessor.

IBM and Microsoft made an announcement at Comdex in November that their "Platform for the 90s" was to be based on the capabilities of the Intel 80386SX, 80386, 80486 and future Intel family microprocessors.
In 1988 we saw the first PCs using the Intel 80386SX, a half-way house between the 80286 and 80386 microprocessors.
You are less likely to exceed the limits of an 80386SX, and if a 386 version of the software becomes available you will greatly benefit.

A video signal is a sequence of images or frames, which are displayed at a given frame rate (e.g., 15 to 30 frames-per-second) to simulate the appearance of motion to a human observer.
Much of the processing is concerned with positioning a pointer into a decompression frame consisting of null values and color values as palette indices for pixels where the values changed in comparison to the previous frame.
In such applications, the compression process is not subject to the same computational constraints as the process of decompression and playback and the compression process is not required to perform its work at video frame rates.
