Prior to the 80486, the 80x86 CPU family could probably be categorized as having moderate to good predictability and good determinacy (in systems without off-chip cache).
It's just that the 80486 is so complex that the data is just too much for most people to handle.) What I'd really like is a software tool to do this computation for me, but alas I know of none (and neither does Intel when last I asked).
Unfortunately, the 80486 is optimized to execute with caches turned on, and needs a cache to keep the instruction execution unit fully fed. Also, turning caches off eliminates "sure-thing" cache hits such as popping registers from the stack after the ISR has pushed them only a few dozen instructions previously.

I created a simple test application and attempted to run it on the emulator.
When the emulator starts, the IDE first complains that 80486 CPUs can't support the emulator (I'm running on a Pentium 4/2.4gHz) and then the emulator complains that my executable isn't a proper PocketPC binary.

The main problem seems to be that the CPU type is always detected as being an 80386, rather than an 80486.
In all cases, the WinNT setup program, and various other check programs, report the CPU type as an 80386DX, rather than an 80486.
I now that the 80486 support was supposed to be there a while ago, so I suspect I'm making a mistake somewhere.
