Intel 8080 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Intel 8080 was the successor to the Intel 8008 (this was due to it being assembly language source-compatible because it used the same instruction set developed by Computer Terminal Corporation).
Shortly after the launch of the 8080, the Motorola 6800 competing design was introduced, and after that, the MOS Technology 6502 clone of the 6800.
At Intel, the 8080 was followed by the compatible and electrically more elegant 8085, and later by the assembly language compatible 16-bit 8086 and then the 8/16-bit 8088, which was selected by IBM for its new PC to be launched in 1981.

 The Intel 8080
The 8080 was created by the Intel with Federico Faggin as the lead designer (his last chip before he left and started Zilog).
The 8080 was released in March of 1974.
The 8080 family is also referred to as the MCS-80.

 The 8008 & The 8080
The 8080 microprocessor was conceived by Faggin in the summer of 1971.
The 8080 chip was designed by Masatoshi Shima in 1972-74, in a period of approximately 15 months, under Faggin’s supervision.
The contribution by Stan Mazor was limited to a couple of instructions to the instruction set.

Olympus C-8080WZ first impressions - Digital Photography Now
The 8080 is not as compact or as lightweight as its 8MP peers, with the exception of the Sony DSC F-828.
The old E-10/20 had a 4x (35-140mm equivalent) zoom and the 8080 has extended this further down the wide end to an equivalent 28-140, though this is to the cost of maximum aperture, which drops from f/2.0-2.4 throughout the zoom range to f/2.4-3.5.
The 8080 is portrayed as an SLR-style camera and its body layout and design aren't too dissimilar to the old E-10/20, though gone is the optical through the lens finder in favour of a 240,000 pixel electronic finder.

 The Last 8008 and 8080's?
I have a small supply of 8080 chips, support circuitry, and displays to build these with, and each "prototype" will be unique with unique firmware and chip selections.
8080 chips of this type and condition alone are rare; a working 8080 system that does something useful is rare indeed and a great demonstration of technological history.
The 8008 (compared to the 8080) was extremely difficult to get running and to interface with - the 18 pin package doesn't have all the signals to run a system and these must be recreated by external TTL logic.

IMSAI 8080 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(later renamed to IMSAI Manufacturing Corp.) in 1976, was an early Intel 8080, S-100 bus based computer, compatible with its main competitor, the earlier MITS Altair 8800, by which it was inspired.
An IMSAI 8080 and an acoustic coupler type modem were among the hacking tools used by the main character in the 1983 movie WarGames.
It was selected over a more modern model so that the audience would immediately recognize it as the device that interfaced with the telephone.

The 8080 was designed as an enhanced version of the 8008 (increased number of signal inputs and outputs, increasing of efficiency about ten times, only six peripheral chips needed, extended instruction set, N-Channel MOS technology).
Because of the potential of 17 V and the increased number of pins the speed of 8080 was much higher than the speed of the 8008.
The size of the silicon die on which the 8080 is etched had been reduced from one manufacturer to another (230 by 210 mils, or 48,300 square mils to 131 by 169 mils, or 22,139 square mils).

 8080 vs 8086 flags
The 8080 had 8-bit registers that were pushed and popped in pairs: BC, DE, HL, PSW The PSW pair consisted of the 8-bit A register (accumulator) and the flag register (also 8-bits).
The original x86 16-bit flags register is lead out with the 8080 compatible flags in one 8-bit half, with the bits in the same positions as they were on the 8080.
An 8080 simulator would only use AL as an 8-bit accumulator in place of the A register of the 8080.

I considered it a cheap shot to find that most of the "IMSAI 8080" labeling was obscured by a prop instruction label during the movie.
An IMSAI 8080 was originally to have had a "walk-on" part in Turner Network Television's "Pirates of Silicon Valley"- a Hollywood version of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates from their hacking days to the distant present.

Unlike flooded aperture devices, the proprietary beam splitting technique utilized in the 8080 retains the input Gaussian intensity distribution, thereby providing the high quality output required for film recording applications.
This linearization is readily accomplished on the Model 8080 by manual gain adjustment of each channels respective RF driver.

Happily, all seems to be reconciled, with the unexpected result that Ed Roberts and IMSAI 8080 creator Joe Killian have "virtually" met and communicated in a polite and respectful manner for the first time ever, a direct result of my having copied e-mail communications to each during resolution of the misunderstanding.
