Topic: 81mm Mortar

  81mm M1 Mortar
Normally, mortars are fired in defilade, such as from the reverse side of hills or ridges, which gives the gunners protection from direct fire even though close to the enemy.
Their light mortar units would follow quickly, and place their fire on our strong points from fairly close distances, enabling them to fire with reasonable accuracy even though at night and without accurate registration.
Our battalion's 81mm mortar platoon, consisting of 6 mortars, were assigned to the battalion's three rifle companies depending on need, and were registered in before nightfall so they could safely respond with appropriate type ammo when called in.

Hocthkiss Brandt 81mm Long Barrel Light Mortar
The 81mm mortar is the heaviest piece of fire power that an infantry battalion has in its armoury.
Mortar fire is particularly lethal to dismounted infantry in the open and is also useful for neutralising 'dug-in' strong points, or forcing enemy armour to close down while still some distance away, forcing him to rely on optics, such as sights or periscopes.
The fire of each mortar section is controlled by the MFCs (Mortar Fire Controllers, two per section), usually of NCO rank, who are generally positioned well forward of the troops being supported, bearing in mind the planning range of 5,000m.

The Mortars are of a conventional pattern, based on the original Finnish Tampella designs and using as many common items as possible.
The split-barrel Mortar is intended for greater mobility when being carried on foot or in light vehicles, though the penalty for the reduced bulk is a small increase in weight because of the screw collar in the middle of the barrel.

The 81mm Mortar is on issue to all infantry battalions, with each battalion having a mortar platoon with three or four sections; and each section deploying 2 mortars.
Mortar fire is particularly lethal to infantry in the open and in addition is very useful for neutralising dug-in strong points or forcing armour to close down.
The 81mm mortar mid-life improvement will inevitably involve digitisation, but as this is slipping in time towards 2015-20 measures have been taken in the interim to enhance the performance of the existing mortar.

The tests were successful, with evaluators reporting that, unlike the parachute flares, illumination from the mortar allowed them to see their instruments when the new system was used.
With the relatively light weight of the mount (about 400 pounds) and the added possibility of firing explosive ordinance, it was conceived that this system might be adapted for use on the smaller 82-foot and 95-foot patrol boats, whose primary mission up to that time had been law enforcement.
The project of adapting the mortar for dual purpose use was given to the only ordinance man assigned to Coast Guard headquarters, Chief Warrant Officer (Guns) Elmer I. Hicks, a former fire control technician.
