8405 Asbolus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
8405 Asbolus is a Centaur, that is, an icy asteroid that orbits between Jupiter and Neptune.
Asbolus is believed to be 66±4 km in diameter.
Centaurs are dark in colour, because their icy surfaces have darkened after long exposure to solar radiation and the solar wind.

Asbolus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Greek mythology, Asbolus (Greek for sooty) was a centaur.
When Heracles came to visit the centaur Pholus, Pholus opened a jug of wine for him which belonged to all the Centaurs; Asbolus saw Pholus do this and brought the other Centaurs running.
The party got rowdy and a battle ensued in which Pholus and Chiron, as well as Asbolus, met their deaths at Heracles' hands.

8405 Asbolus had already been observed in August 1998 by Brown (2000) who obtained at the Keck I telescope a flat spectrum between 1.5 and 2.4 microns at a resolution of about 100.
However, our observations of 8405 Asbolus do not support this, as the absence of detectable water ice on this body would imply that it is currently active, which has not been demonstrated so far.
8405 Asbolus will pass through perihelion in 2002, and we are planning to observe it intensively with different techniques to detect any possible activity from that time on.

 Orbit of Asbolus
The following are plots of the osculating elements of the orbit of 8405 Asbolus during the period 1600-2020, covering a total of 384 consecutive dates separated by 400 days each.
The minimum distance between Saturn and Asbolus was 0.466 AU on May 12, 1702.
As can be seen from the plot of the semi-major axis, the encounter "shrinked" the orbit of Asbolus, reducing its period of revolution from nearly 81 years to 75-76 years, which is its value at present.

Asbolus may have been ejected from the Kuiper Belt by a collision that produced the observed crater, and this collision may have increased its rotation rate.
The chemical and structural heterogeneity of Asbolus may help explain discrepant observations of other centaurs, some of which were thought to be homogeneous objects.

This suggests that Asbolus may be rotating faster (4.47 hours) than previously suspected.

8405 Asbolus is a chunk of ice and debris called a Centaur object which orbits the sun between Saturn and Uranus.
Centaurs, which orbit the Sun between Jupiter and Neptune, are thought to be icy bodies that were perturbed from their original orbits in the Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt, which extends to at least 10 times the distance of Pluto from the Sun.
McCarthy, an University of Arizona researcher, speculates that the collision creating the impact crater dislodged Asbolus and sent it on its way to its closer orbit around the Sun.

90377 Sedna - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike Pluto and Charon, Sedna appears to have very little methane ice or water ice on its surface; Chad Trujillo and his colleagues at the Gemini Observatory in Hawaii suggest that Sedna's dark red color is caused by a hydrocarbon sludge, or tholin, like that found on 5145 Pholus.
Its surface is homogeneous in colour and spectrum; this is probably because Sedna, unlike objects nearer the sun, is rarely impacted by other bodies, which would expose bright patches like that on 8405 Asbolus.
Sedna's and Triton's spectra have been recently compared suggesting the following common model of the surface: 24% Triton tholin, 7% amorphous carbon, 26% methanol ice with 33% methane.

STScI- PR00-31: Centaur's Bright Surface Spot Could be Crater of Fresh Ice
The unexpectedly varied surface of a wayward piece of space debris has given astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope new insights into the characteristics of a ghostly population of asteroid-sized bodies, called Centaur objects, which orbit the Sun and dwell in the realm of the giant planets.
While observing a 48-mile-wide (80-kilometer-wide) object called 8405 Asbolus, astronomers were surprised to find that one side of the object looks like it has a fresh crater estimated to be less than 10 million years old.
The Centaurs' orbits were perturbed into paths that carry them into the realm of the outer planets.
