In 1934 a significant increase in the defence budget was approved and in 1935 the Minister of Defence announced that the UDF was to be expanded.
During the war, the SAAF played a major role in North Africa, where its fighter, bomber and reconnaissance squadrons enabled the allied desert air force to attain air superiority over the Axis air forces by the beginning of 1942.
During the rest of the twentieth century, the SAAF took part in the various "border wars" that were fought by South Africa.

The establishment of the SAAF was greatly facilitated by the extremely generous decision by the Imperial Government in 1919 to allocate to the Union some 100 aeroplanes from its war stocks, complete with spared and equipment.
Under this scheme the SAAF began to burgeon and blossom, and by September 1941 the total number of military aircraft in the Union had increased to 1 709, while the personnel strength had leapt to 31 204 - 956 of whom were pilots.
The unit was renamed the SAAF Regiment on 1 August 1943, its task being the defence of airfields and the capture of enemy aerodromes.

At No.5 Elementary and Reserve Flying Training School, Hanwell, he flew the Blackburn B-2, and in November, 1938, he was posted to No. 3 FTS at South Cerney in Gloucestershire, near the Wiltshire border, flying the Hawker Hart, Audax and Fury.
On 19th, flying AK-A (an aircraft still bearing No.213 Squadron's marking), he got five confirmed in one day (he was to surpass even this later), two Me 109s on the first patrol in the morning, and three more on the evening patrol, this fight having been witnessed by his CO and the Squadron.
Throughout this campaign SAAF Squadrons flew more than 5,000 sorties, destroyed 71 aircraft in the air and at least 70 on the ground, losing 79 pilots and aircrew killed and posting 5 missing; a great contribution to the first victory of the Allies in the war.

The SAAF commanders determined that the most suitable aircraft at hand was the Impala: it was a small and highly manoeuvrable aircraft, with good and reliable cannon armament and the endurance needed for an intercept of this kind.

On 4 October 1967 it moved to Pietersburg and the name changed to Advanced Flying School, the name 85 Combat Flying School was given to the unit in 1982.
Initially Advanced Flying School operated Vampires till these aircraft were replaced by the Impala in 1970.
On 1 July 1986, 89 Combat Flying School was established and 85 Combat Flying School became solely responsible for all Impala combat training in the South African Air Force.

It is the SAAF's northernmost base, situated near the border with Zimbabwe, as well as being its most modern, and is known unofficially as Fighter Town, RSA.
The base was officially opened on 14 October 1987 as AFB Louis Trichardt, but changed it's name to match that of the nearby town on 7 November 2003.
In the near future, 85 Combat Flying School will be re-locating to this base from its current base at AFB Hoedspruit.

It is with great sadness that Santini's learnt of the Impala Jet crash in the North of the country of Friday 26 April 2002.
The pilot, 28 year old Captain Brett Burmeister of 85 Combat Flying School, AFB Hoedspruit was killed in the accident.
The SAAF has convened a Board of Enquiry to investigate the accident.

By all accounts, SAAF No. 2 Squadron was treated like any other squadron of the 18th Fighter Bomber Wing (FBW), to which it was attached during the course of the war.
In 1952, the 18th FBW Commander asserted that "the operations of this unit is [sic] conducted in the same manner as the two squadrons of the 18th Group." No. 2 Squadron endured common hardships with their American partners during many unit relocations to austere Korean bases.
The SAAF had two advisors on the FEAF staff who visited their unit frequently, and seemed to have no overt problems with command arrangements or operational objectives.
