It is possible that, towards the end of the period of Roman rule in Britain, a leading family from amongst the Dumnonii, under one Caradoc, was already taking a part in the administration of the local 'civitas'.
The area is first mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in AD 823 and it was soon given an Ealdorman to act on behalf of the king in the region.
His men are recorded as having beaten off Viking Invasions in AD 851 & 878, though Exeter was successfully sacked in 1003.

At dusk on a summer’s evening in the year 795 AD, a sinister looking high-prowed ship ploughed into the sands at Lambay Island just north of Howth Head on the east coast of Ireland near Dublin.
To them also we owe all of the earliest towns in the country: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Cork and Limerick all began as Viking settlements, and, even after their absorption into the Gaelic culture, the commercial interests of the newcomers kept them centred in these areas.
As early as 851 AD one DubhGilla, son of Broder, is mentioned as king of Idrone in County Carlow.

 London: History - K12 Academics
By 600 AD, the Anglo-Saxons had created a new settlement (Lundenwic) about 1km upstream from the old Roman city, around what is now Covent Garden.
There was probably a harbor at the mouth of the River Fleet for fishing and trading, and this trading grew until disaster struck in 851 AD, when the new city's ramshackle defenses were overcome by a massive Viking raid and it was razed to the ground.
A Viking occupation twenty years later was short-lived, and Alfred the Great, the new King of England, established peace and moved the settlement within the defensive walls of the old Roman city (then called Lundenburgh).

 Doyle Clan History Part 1
Patrick first went to Europe to train as a cleric, and from around 432 AD spent the rest of his life converting the Irish to Christianity.
One authority, however, Rev. John Francis Shearman, asserts that the eponymous ancestor of the east Leinster Doyles was DubhGilla (a Viking), son of Bruadar, King of Idrone (County Carlow), in the year 851 AD.
However, it does not appear in works concerned with Irish Genealogy, since the founder of the family is thought to be descended from a Viking who came to Ireland raiding and then settled, before the Anglo-Norman invasions. It is sometimes also claimed that the Doyles are an offshoot of the great Decies sept of O’Phelan.
