With Tyrese's "2000 Watts" dimming on the charts and the cherry bomb that was Sisqo's last album, the only twentysomething male vocalist in mainstream r&b that seems to matter is Usher Raymond (with a special mention, of course, to Donnell Jones).
As far as modern r&b records go, "8701" is a surprisingly good, tight groove that overall stays consistent throughout the ride.
Usher's 8701 is the album that confirms that he is one of the superstars of the overcrowded R&B genre.

8701 (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was released on August 7, 2001 by Arista Records.
The name of the album was actually based upon the timespan of Usher's career in entertainment to that point (1987 - 2001); the matching of the title and the release date was a coincidence.
In 2006, Prince released his own album which had a relevance with numbers entitled 3121 in which the album's first single was released on 12/13 (3121 backwards) in 2005 and the album was released on March 21 of the next year.

 Usher - "8701" lyrics, reviews
If it's true that the plug was pulled on Usher's latest album earlier this year because parts of it were being swapped on Napster, then Arista owes Hank Barry and Shawn Fanning a big wet thank-you kiss.
The rise and rise of Usher continues with the release of his fourth album 8701 this week.
8701 sees Usher Raymond taking more control of the operation, developing his producing, singing and song writing skills to a new level and taking responsibility for twelve of the writing credits across the seventeen tracks.

Confessions (Usher album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Confessions is the fourth album by American RandB singer Usher, released on March 23, 2004 via Arista Records.
Usher told MTV that he was inspired by Augustine of Hippo to make the album sound as if he is confessing to something.
However, when Usher presented the songs from the album to Antonio Reid, then in charge of Arista Records, they agreed that the album needed a first single.

8701 by Usher (lyrics & reviews)
I think the songs he promoted this album with are actually better than the promotional songs from the last album, but unfortunately, the rest of the album doesn't stand out as much.
Another concern I have with this album is that Usher spends much of his time unconvincingly telling girls to lose their man and get with him; I say unconvincingly because of the lyrics (you can tell JD wrote them).
However, Usher's 8701 ranks up there with Boyz II Men's II for the quality and smooth R&B it has from the beginning of the CD until the end.

What speaks the most highly about this album is that the album tracks are on par with the singles and may even surpass them depending on your tastes.
This album deserves a little more than 4 stars because it not only is the definitive Usher album but stands with a lot of the greats in history.
The album is slowed down midway by some pointless cuts that are all basically sound-a-likes of singles by Kelis and Pink, etc that were big at the time.

Slant Magazine - Music Review: Usher: 8701   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Perhaps due to its instantly recognizable hook and admirable exploration of a conflicted emotional terrain ("I relayed her ignorance to you/Wish I knew how to separate the two"), the single has become one of the most savory hits of the summer, satiating the everyman and fashionista alike.
The track will undoubtedly be the first in a string of R&B hits from Usher's fourth album, 8701 (named in honor of the 14-year gap between today and 1987, the year he discovered music).
While the album's song titles are so similar that it's often hard to distinguish one from the next, the rock-metabolized "I Can't Let U Go" and the percussive "U R The One" more than differentiate the R&B blur.

This is an excellent album by Usher, I have brought this album on hearing Confessions, but this album by far outweighs any albums he has esatablished so far.
The album is well constructed, it is almost written in a ballad form and it directly addresses the theme of love - a meticulous beginning by the song U remind me and a brilliant ending by the song Separated.
This is a slickly produced album which will have you wanting more from Usher (in which case, there are two other albums, but this is his best by far).

It would be more accurate to call this Usher's coming of age record, bridging the gap from boy to man, as he navigates the emotional fallout from the disintegration of his relationship, and the events that led up to it--real or imagined.
The album is neatly divided between uptempo jams and smooth ballads, and Usher doesn't disappoint on either front.

On the smooth follow-up to his six-times-platinum 1997 album, My Way, twenty-two-year-old R&B heartthrob Usher shows the polish of a showbiz veteran.
Amid all the playboy pouting and preening, Usher's vocals are impressively adaptable, lacing brash beats from the Neptunes and sophisticated ballads from hitmakers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis with equal dexterity.
If the album has a fault, it's that Usher never surrenders his meticulously groomed veneer - don't hold your breath for a genuine rawboned holler or hint of reckless spontaneity among these calculated compositions.
