8-track cartridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 8-track cartridge is an audio storage magnetic tape cartridge technology, popular from the late 1960s to the early 1980s.
The 8-track version simplified the mechanism by rolling the motorized metal capstan in the player against a pinch wheel installed inside the cartridge to pull the tape across the player's read head (in the earlier 4-track Stereo-Pak, the pinch wheel was part of the player and flipped into the cartridge through a hole).

Cartridge (electronics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term cartridge tends to be applied loosely to a large range of techniques which conform to this general description.
In this case the design was fairly crude, with the entire address and data busses exposed by the port; the cartridge was memory mapped directly into the system's address space.
The advantage of cartridges over other approaches such as loading software from other media is that the software is instantly available, with no loading time, and it is held in a very robust and hence damage-resistant form.

Tape jamming and mechanical problems were a major "kiss of death" to consumer acceptance of 8-track....and these problems were entirely avoidable if the tape makers had maintained consistent design standards and quality control.
Since the capstan's movement regulates tape speed and movement, the somewhat tenuous grip that the capstan/pinch roller combination has on the tape sometimes leads to tape slowdowns, even if the motor is moving at a correct and steady speed (which it often isn't).
Tapes that have been sitting for a long time, especially in shrink wrap, can be worse than old, well used tapes because of the heat factor.
