8mm is still a popular format for video cameras, however it has currently been superseded by miniDV, also referred to as DV.
As 8mm is an Analog format, it requires capturing to computer via an analog capture card.
It is recommended that footage archived on the 8mm format, be transferred to miniDV (for future editing) or DVD (for long term optical archiving).

The 8mm magnetic tape is wound between two spools, held in a hard-shelled cassette.
In 8mm and Hi8, the PCM-audio was recorded at a sample-rate of 32KHz, compared to VHS PCM at 44.1KHz.
It is also worth noting that 8mm tapes (like all videotape) will eventually deteriorate and lose their recorded contents over time, resulting in image noise and drop-outs building up as time goes by.

8mm video used a tape whose width is 33% less than VHS/Betamax tape (~12.7mm), allowing even further miniaturization in the recorder's tape-transport assembly and cassette media.
On the plus side, the 8mm camcorder generally produced higher quality recordings than a VHS/VHS-C camcorder, and the standard 8mm cassette could record up to two hours.
On the down side, since the 8mm format was incompatible with VHS, 8mm recordings could not be played in VHS VCRs.
