  Joey's Movie Review: "8mm"
It's very obvious that "8mm" was written by the guy who wrote "Seven." It's got very dark subject matter, it's a detective story that spends a lotta time on the actual investigation, and it's got a good guy coming face-to-face with pure evil in the end...
I don't know the name of the girl on the actual 8mm footage (I think her name is Jenny Powell, but I can't be sure), but she had the toughest, and most under-appreciated job of all.
She probably stands out the most to me. Out of all the characters in the movie, her's is the one that I'll remember the most.

Eight millimeter movie film is 25 ft. long and 16mm wide in its original form.
A word of caution: although the original width is 16mm, 16mm movie film cannot be used in your 8mm camera.
This is because 8mm movie film requires twice as many perforations as 16mm film.

This movie had a lot of mixed reviews when it first came out and I actually only watched it a few years later as it was talked about with such a taboo rating and the fact is, it is a very harsh story to watch but very well presented.
8mm sent chills up my spine from start to finish from the acting to the wonderful camera work this movie is guaranteed to get a reaction.

 philjohn.com - movie reviews: 8mm
'8mm' is quite a dark and depressing voyage into the darkness of the human soul and psyche, leading us to dark places we usually do not see, confronting us with dark and disturbing pictures, darker than we would probably have suspected.
The visual aspect of the movie is sometimes manifesting as truly extraordinary, but sometimes as quite cliché-like, making use of a lot of rain and darkness.
But in contrast to that other movie, '8mm' has a message to come with the pictures, it also is more frightening by showing less.

Since the 8mm frame was one-quarter the size of "sixteen", this method reduced by a factor of four the amount of film necessary to give the same running time - four minutes - as a standard one-hundred-foot length of 16mm stock.
The success of 8mm film was almost immediate, and within about fifteen years, 16mm film became almost exclusively a format of the professional filmmaker.
16mm and standard 8mm formats had placed the perforation at the corners of the frame to reduce fogging of the image at the head and tail of the roll caused during loading of the film.

 Super 8mm & 8mm Movie film Lubrication
Movie film cleaning and lubrication is vital to the life of your movie films!
What's most important is the films are as clean as possible (there will always be the occassional bit of fluff or hair now and then.....so always keep a can of dust off near the projector, and blow it into the gate from the top to dislodge the offensive particle while projecting!).
Kodak stopped lubricating their 8mm films after processing back in 1984, and to the best of my knowledge there isn't any lab processing 8mm films that automatically lubricates them after processing as a normal part of their service.

Schumacher's 8mm is a bloody and brutal flick, distasteful and violent verging on pornographic.
It is set in the scum encrusted underbelly of porn and the slime that make their living from exploitation of young flesh and there is absolutely nothing sexy about it.
As Cage watches it, we see enough of the "actual" movie to get an idea where it's going, but we are not treated to the vile climax.

Though it doesn't present a snuff film (a movie which documents a person's murder for real, usually during or after some form of sexual act) as explicitly as the cult classic Mute Witness and violence as shockingly as, say, Natural Born Killers, 8 MM stays in your head long after you see it.
Nicolas Cage, after a couple ho-hum movies, returns to material which allows him to utilize his strong acting abilities.
As Tom Welles, a private detective and caring family man to a wife and newly-born daughter, Cage skillfully and convincingly portrays a decent man whose unwavering energy slowly transforms into obssession and violence as he is pulled into a nightmarish world of underground pornographers and brutal sexual deviants.

After securing a promise for absolute discretion, the widow shows Tom what was found in her dead husband's safe-- an 8mm film that apparently shows a teenage girl (Jenny Powell) being brutally murdered by a man wearing a leather mask.

 Halfbakery: Simple 8mm movie scanner
The simple 8mm scanner would consist of a small flatbed-style mechanism, two reel holders (one of them motorized; the other with a simple friction tensioner), and a couple of pulleys (one of which should preferably include a mechanical link to the friction tensioner).
I like some of what is proposed on the "digital telecine project" page, but for 8mm film where the image is about 1/4" wide, a 640x480 scan would require a resolution of 2560dpi; 600dpi or even 1200dpi just isn't going to cut it.
Except for such films (and I wouldn't expect there to be many of those in 8mm or even 16mm), the base side is much less prone to suffer serious damage than the emulsion side.
