8 mm film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The film spools actually contain a 16 mm film with twice as many perforations along each edge than normal 16 mm film, which is only exposed along half of its width.
When the film reaches its end in the takeup spool, the camera is opened and the spools in the camera are flipped and swapped (the design of the spool hole ensures that this happens properly) and the same film is exposed along the side of the film left unexposed on the first loading.
During processing, the film is split down the middle, resulting in two lengths of 8 mm film, each with a single row of perforations along one edge, so fitting four times as many frames in the same amount of 16 mm film.

Super 8 mm film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Super 8mm film is a motion picture film format that was developed in the 1960s and released on the market in 1965 by Eastman Kodak as an improvement of the older 8mm home movie format.
The film is 8mm wide, exactly the same as the older standard 8mm film, and retains standard 8's single perforations, but the dimensions of the perforations are reduced, allowing the exposed area to be increased in size.
The sound film had a magnetic soundtrack, and came in larger cartridges than the original so as to accommodate a longer film path (required for smoothing the film movement before it reached the recording head), and a second aperture for the recording head.

 8mm Film Gauges
Double 8mm, called such because the film is 16mm's wide, with perforations that are identical in size and pitch to that of 16mm film....although with an extra perforation which is required since the 8mm frame is 1/4th that of a 16mm frame.
After processing, the film is slit down the middle yielding two lengths of 8mm width movie film, which are spliced together in their order of the first half in front, yielding a total length of projection footage in either 50ft(from 25ft spools), 100ft(from 50ft spools...now long discontinued in use), and 200ft (from 100ft spools).
This film gauge was referred to as Standard 8mm or 8mm for many years until Super 8mm came along in 1964, which after it was referred to as Regular 8mm here in the USA to separate it from Super 8mm.

PPS Brief History of 8mm Film
This film gauge was clearly based on its 16mm big brother, and had an additional sprocket hole added, with a frame size 1/4th that of 16mm film.
Also, another similar format known as Double Super 8mm uses a principle similar to that of Double Regular 8mm, that is, film that is 16mm wide but with the Super 8 perforations and run thru the camera exposing each half, then to be slit and joined after processing.
This film is dimensionally identical to that of Kodak's Super 8mm, but on a polyester/mylar base versus Kodak(& others that made Super 8mm film) use of Triacetate filmbase.

The dye stability of Kodachrome 40 and 25 is far superior to other color films because Kodachrome 40 and 25 is essentially a layered, fine grained fl and white emulsion to which highly stable dyes are coupled during processing.
Super 8 and 8mm filmmakers have maintained a strong interest in fl and white film, particularly for the gritty grain of Tri-X and the platinum-surfaced, mid-range tones of Plus-X. Kodak offers two excellent fl and white Super 8 reversal (direct projection) films.
