The 8th Armored Division was activated on 1 April 1942.
On 19 February the division moved to Roermond, the Netherlands, and launched a diversionary attack, pushing the enemy north of the Heide woods and east of the Roer River.
After a period of rest and training in mid-March, the Division crossed the Rhine, 26 March, and attacked Dorsten, which was cleared in the face of stubborn resistance.

The 8th Division did not have battle experience in World War I; it returned to the United States and was inactivated in January 1919.
The Crozon Peninsula was cleared, 19 September, and the Division drove across France to Luxembourg, moved to the Hurtgen Forest, 20 November, cleared Hurtgen on the 28th and Brandenburg, 3 December, and pushed on to the Roer.
On 6 April the Division attacked northwest to aid in the destruction of enemy forces in the Ruhr Pocket, and by the 17th had completed its mission.

On July 27, the division drove through the Ay river line, opening a hole for the 79th and 90th Divisions, which broke east and west with armor and began the lightning drives that were to swoop past Paris to Germany.
Early in February, the division was transferred to VII Corps control and moved northward to the west bank of the Roer near Duren.
A limited number of men reporting to the division for training were assigned to an eight-week cycle, and subsequently were sent to such common specialist schools as the clerk-typist and automatic maintenance courses conducted by the 8th Division's Specialist Training Regiment.

Reorganized and re-designated on 1 October 1963 as the 2d Battalion, 8th Infantry, it was concurrently relieved from assignment to the 1st Infantry Division and assigned to the 4th Infantry Division.

The U.S. 8th infantry division was activated early in 1918 at the tail end of WW1, however no engagements were fought by the U.S. 8th infantry division during the great war.
The division's troops left their Irish training base for the Utah beach landing grounds (which were by now firmly held by the allied forces) in Normandy early in July 1944.

The 8th Gebirgsjager Division was formed late in the War by converting the 157th Gebirgsjager Division, in name, to the 8th Gebirgsjager Division.
An attempt was made to raise the 8th Gebirgsjager Division before 1945, in 1944, by using soldiers from the 139th Gebirgsjager Regiment, but the attempt was never completed and the men being used were formed into Divisional Group Krautler and given the description, Division 140 z.b.V, which meant the unit was a "special purpose" unit.
When the 8th was finally created by renaming the 157th Gebirgsjager Division, it saw action in Italy for the duration of its short life, fighting in mainly Northern Italy against the Allies in the Bologna area and Po Valley.

A planned 10th Division had to be broken up before it completed forming, to make up losses in the other units, while 1st Australian Armoured Division never left the home country (though some of its battalions fought the Japanese in New Guinea).

 28th Field Artillery 8th Infantry Division
In Mid December 1956 the Division participated in Operation War Hawk a NATO field exercise.
Grafenwher and Vilsek were, and probably still are, famous for their mud in winter and spring and dust in the summer.

It is important to clarify that I am not the original author of this publication, and that I have only transcribed this document for historical purposes.
As the grandson of an 8th Division officer (First Lieutenant Robert A. McDonald, Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 28th Regiment), I started this project as a way to learn more about my grandfather's service in World War II, and as a means of preserving valuable military history for the benefit of others.
